Got some serious razorn burn yesterday trying out my safety razor first time.

So healed and scruffy again, this time it all went much better. New Feather blade did the trick, scary sharp and slid through like nothing.

Got a few cuts but not the razors fault. Have to learn not to put any pressure at all using featherĀ“s. :)

yeah .. you went a bit nuts getting a Slant as your first DE razor i think.
I have a slightly old ( not awesome old ) Gillette adjustable and i used it at 1 or 2 for the first few shaves. even then my first time i shaved like a cartridge blade and razor burned the crap out of my face. now that i have some technique down, i'm at a 5 on the dial and that works pretty good for me. I'm also rocking Gillette blades from the 70's right now too!

This is my set up now.
Still need to get a "real" straight razor but this works just fine. It didn't take very long to get the hang of the change and only lost a few chunks of skin.
My skin doesn't like more than one pass so I only shave with the hair and it lasts long enough for me. Its not the quickest but I enjoy the process so it works well.

Travel cases for your DE razors. Did any of you buy one on its own without having to buy another razor kit? I'd like something that holds a brush, razor, and blades like the one in the picture below. However, they all seem to want you to buy the whole kit as well.

I just put in an order to Fendrihan.com for a Muhle synthetic brush, a leather razor travel case, leather brush case and variety pack of blades.

Fendrihan has free shipping over $50 and a Canadian company to boot.

My wife has been complaining about the cost of razor blades for years, especially once Costco stopped selling mega-packs of Sensor Excel cartridges (which I've been using for 20 years) and switched to Fusion, which are almost double the price. So, she was happy to get me a Merkur 34C set for my birthday.

Did my first shave last night, and it went better than expected. I used a Derby blade, as I'd read they are forgiving, and Proraso Red cream. Only a few nicks, but my technique, both lathering with the brush and holding the razor, has room for improvement. No razor burn, but holy hell did the alum sting, which I guess means I need to lighten up on the blade a bit.

This guy has a great series of videos for first timers:

Right on! Pick up a blade sample pack, if you haven't already. Yeah, use a little less pressure, and also watch your angle of attack. The way the hair grows is different for everyone so just experiment

So, after After 2.5 years with my 34C (and many, many, dollars saved on razor blades), I bought a Merkur Progress during Amazon's Black Friday sale. Looking forward to experimenting with the adjustable blade to further dial in (ha, ha) my shave.
