Got some serious razorn burn yesterday trying out my safety razor first time. Pretty sure the Merkur blade that came in the box is faulty, it scraped and tugged more than sliced through.

From my readings, what blades work really depends on the person. Here is a good summary of each blade and characteristics. Choosing the right blade.

I used my Merkur for the first time earlier this week. No nicks, no tugs, no rash. Best fucking shave I've ever had in my entire life. Don't know how much reading you did into using the razors or if you're already a skilled hand and I'm a grom trying to share what puny knowledge i have on the subject but main thing i read was don't press hard. Here is a good instructional video that I watched.

I got a lot of information from here and here. From what a lot of older dudes that have been straight razoring or double-edge shaving for years, having a quality shave cream or soap is important, then spending the proper time to lather the soap, and then prepare the face is important. good luck dude.

I like to have a nice, hot shower before shaving, with an emphasis on directing the water right onto my face/neck. I know I'm ready when I can feel my whiskers are very soft.

Good luck, and remember, no pressure! Also, I held off from doing more than 2 passes until I felt my skin had gotten accustomed to a sharp blade being pulled across it.

I didn't have to worry who was on scissors for a good 5 years but now I am back into getting hair cuts, once I get a good cut I do a selfie and I show it to the next person cutting my hair instead of trying to explain what I want

you had a good haircut?

when?

I did tons of research, looked at lots of vidoes and how to´s. No matter how or at what angleI held the razor the blade tugged. The merkur slanted is supposed to be a very aggressive razor so I took it very easy at first, but when the blade tugged and felt weird I put more pressure on it. Bad idea.

I polished the blade up against a piece of cloth (like stropping it) and it felt much better for a few strokes, so I´m guessing the blade is faulty. I read that it is not uncommon with duds.

Good is of course a subjective thing but as opposed to the Jeff Lebowski look … I started getting haircuts 3 yrs ago

I just picked up a similar safety razor and had the same experience. I'm going to blame either the blade or the lousy shaving cream or not having a brush and applying the cream by hand.

The feather blades are great but it is a practice thing. My first few times resulted in some burn and a few bloody nicks. I was off on angle, pressure and speed.

As well I find on the neck it is best to do the first pass with the grain of the whiskers to take the majority off then a second pass eith the other clean side against the grain. Makes for a super close shave.
