Actualy I liked the car enough to buy an 01 [HTML_REMOVED] 02(virtualy identical) and log 350K in 4 yrs but I had neither the time or place to work on a car at -20 so it went to the dealr in Peeg who was very good but not cheap, I think driving 40K a year in vancover might be a different experiance than 70-90k a year in PeeG

The 01's specd the TB at 96K which I hit in 14months, since I also needed tires it was cheaper to trade the car for an 02 which specd the TB at 120km but I ducked out on paying for that 1st TB, does 700$ get you all new pulleys, belt tensioner and water pump? 300$ for axle bushing instaled? I noticed you didn't speak to fuel price ?

in any case for the newb I am just saying go into it with your eyes open and do the math

Don't drive hard and you'll save on tires and brakes.

Learn to do maintenance at home. It's not hard at all on some vehicles. Spend a Saturday once a year on larger items like brakes and timing belt.

Actualy I was told by the dealer to drive my new TDi like a sports sedan, revving the piss out of the engine is very fun and the car likes it, the old guys you see wearing hats that are in 5th gear by 50kph just plug the engine up

A fuckedup TB job on a TDi leaves you with a VERY expensive boat anchor which is why I replaced tb/tb tensioner/ all tb pulleys/ waterpump with original VW parts at a really good dealer who did perfect work

and under NO circumstances buy a MK4 with the automatic

Yes, the "Italian tune" aka pedal to the metal is good for blowing out the caked soot in diesels. Yes, these are interference motors, as are most in the world. Every timing belt change on the TDI's should be completed with new tensioners, water pump, fluid - the price is even a better value.

Under every circumstance buy a MK4 with the 09A auto transmission (comes with the BEW PD motors). They are almost bullet proof and I welcome anyone to name one honest VW mechanic that has needed to replace one from mechanical failure. Now the older 01M autos sucked the big one, but the 09A is a fantastic transmission that has many cases of being solid for over 600k miles.

XXXer, you should stop telling false information about VWs from the past that you don't remember all the facts.

you appear to be selectively dancing around the questions but whatever , its easy enough for people to do their hw if they care to but my point is that running a honda or toy forever to save money is a slam dunk … an old mk4 maybe not

I looked at a 96 mk3 golf gti yesterday.
A bit expensive at 4000$ but clean with a bunch of work done on it (tires, suspension, exhaust, timing belt, fuel pump, complete cooling system) in the last 20k, only 135k total.
I m bringing to a mechanic to lift it up tomorrow and if the rust ain t too bad i might jump.
Also come with a spare set of winter tires 20% thread.

Too expensive or too old?
Exhaist is kind of loud, might get annoying on the long run. Those 2l engine seems reliable enough. I saw couple of them with 300k km on them.

You may want to Google the MK3 speedos - some of the older VW speedos rolled over after 300k. The winter tires are toast, the rest is cheap to do. May not be bad if it is not rusty and drives well. Look into the KM

96 GTI with aftermarket suspension and other mods?

I'd pass on that for a daily commuter. It's likely been driven hard.

This is probably sold, but something like this would be way better.

It was a limited search to Golf's under $3500 (guy said 4k was expensive.)

Likely some better options out there, but a modded GTI is also on the Do. Not. Want. list.

but it looks sweet and got a big boom box in the trunk
Jokes aside, my take is that the gamble between a low mileage perhaps raced car and old beater is similar. At least this one got a bunch of work recently done.
Perhaps I ll bring my compressor gauge with me.
Although here I remember measuring perfect compression on my sled engine after a 'light" seize", nevertheless when I open it up aluminum had melted in two point around the rings lol….
A car can be ridden hard within beating the shit out of it, sometimes…
