So it appears that capitalism not longer exists. I now introduce the Socialist Republic of America.

Im all for not have a great depression… but with the US Fed now in complete control of [Freddie and Fannie](http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/7604576.stm), AND now owning 80% of AIG… they have become the nations Mortage Lender AND Insurer.

The the 2 deals will cost`em near 284 billion… (which is about $95 per US citizen)

I can see Canada doing something like that or Soviet Russia, but the US? Crazy times we live in. heh

The Economist has been recommending the Fannie/Freddie nationalizaion for weeks now. Course they also recommend selling it back to private investors for pennies on the dollar once the economy has been stabilized at taxpayers' expense.

Id say the costs could run alot higher than 285 billion. really depends how shitty the housing market gets. Ive heard estimates that 1 trillion was a more likley sum.

How much is the Iraq war costing per day?

Saving Fannie/Freddie/AIG is a drop in the bucket. And money better spent.

Yes this is true. But this point is about the US going all pinko-commie on a supposed free market.

Maybe just perhaps unfettered capitalism isn't the perfect system after all. Nawwww, that can't be it. Must be unseen distortions in the market. Time to cut more regulations and privatize more social institutions. Nothing like hitting the gas when you're driving towards a cliff.

while the US may like to claim theyre free market, they arent nor have they ever been.

bailouts aren't anything new. and theyre necessary in some cases. The fed has to protect against creating an expectation of help in the finance community, that would really turn things to shit.

four words sum American politics up: Taxes, Abortions, God and Gays.

there is no democrat that wants lower taxes on the rich, ban on abortions, God included in the rhetoric, and no gay marriage.

there is no republican that wants to tax the rich, allow abortions, leave faith out of politics, and allow gay marriage.

people in the middle tend to decide elections and vote for i-have-no-idea-what. It's a big cluster fuck.

"big elections about small things"

Why can't the American public get a broader view and realize how petty these issues are?

It's hard to reach poorly cultured and educated groups of people when they think they are right, vote for the wrong party, and usually win. Television is a major part of it also. It's a nasty cycle.
