I'm considering just parking my little rear wheel drive 1000 dollar 95 ranger for the winter. By the way you guys talk I feel like unless I spend 1200 bucks I'm just asking for trouble.

I kept seeing the Nordman tyres but didn't know anything about them.  

No worries though as all the tyres were purchased with some CC rewards my GF had where the CC is switching the auto rewards system at the end of the month so she'd lose half the dollar value.

You can often find pretty good deals on used snow tires on Craigslist.

With a truck, put at least a couple hundred pounds of weight at the very rear of the box.

With some weight in the back and low-end snowies you will be OK.  I only had cheap tires on my Maxima (about $100 each) and drove Whistler/Van almost every weekday in 2016/2017 without incident.
