118 rescued from snowbound highway near Sarnia
Story LinkAbout 118 people have been rescued from a snow-swept Ontario highway that, at one point, was clogged with more than 360 stranded motorists, according to the latest information from the Ontario Provincial Police.
Despite the hundreds who spent up to 24 hours in cars and trucks paralyzed on Highway 402, there were no reports of injuries, said Ontario Community Safety Minister Jim Bradley. OPP Constable Liz Melvin said 37 of the stranded motorists were airlifted and 81 were rescued by ground.
Using snowmobiles and 4X4s, police roared onto the highway between Sarnia and Strathroy around 10:40 a.m. to start picking up hungry and tired motorists, Ontario Provincial Police Const. Dennis Harwood said.
