What chaps my ass are the 400 jobs, +/-, gone. Kaput. Sayonara.

400 stable, reasonably well paying incomes contributing to the economy shit canned.

I would've happily absorbed the small increase in rates to keep those peeps employed.

Discuss?

He's in 'merica, speaking to 'mericans.
If you have a "smart meter" installed on your home there will be no need for a meter man/woman to come read your meter.

and even if they were… you're ok with being spied upon??

Yeah. The thought gives me a woody.

His thoughts aren't that crazy, those smart meters really can grab a lot of information and it's definitely not known that they will be protecting that info.

On another note its the first step towards charging people premiums during the peak usage hours.

As for the jobs….a job is defined as providing a good or service…meter readers do neither…get real jobs, kids.

How the fuck will knowing how much electricity you are pulling tell BC Hydro what you are doing? Srsly? There are so many appliances in a modern BC household that pull electricity at similar rates that it would be virtually impossible to tell what is going on. And does anyone think BC Hydro really cares? Srsly? Are they going to have a command post with hundreds of people monitoring the smart meter numbers to figure out when your AC comes on??

Effing fear mongering over a long overdue change to how our electricity system is run…

Like 50% over five years?

BC Hydro is hurting. Their infrastructure is getting old and it would seem that they haven't been saving much to replace it. They need to cut costs where ever they can. Did they actually get a good deal on Smart Meters and will it make that much of a difference? I don't know. I have a feeling they are banking on busting all the grow ops with them and saving their stolen power. I bet they are losing quite a bit. I also bet the installer guys are going to have a hard time getting into some of these backwoods operations and switching out meters without running into trouble.

About the brain waves coming from these things, who cares. Everyone has wireless everything already. If it is such a big deal just pull out the antennas on whatever "smart appliances" you get, if those even exist yet.

The only concern that I have heard that might have some logistical truth to it is they could allow a big brother type of power company to cycle your smart furnace when it is best for them and most people probably wouldn't even know.

Smart meters will be very important I think in the effective use of in-home electric car charging stations.

can't get enough of that sodium benzoate…

I had one installed at my house this summer and I swear that thing knows when I masturbate. It's disturbing but also kinda erotic at the same time. I know they'll use that information to send that sexy utility girl to my house at just the right time 8).

"The costs of installing the new digital wireless meters is substantial, their accuracy is debatable, and there is much controversy as to whether or not the readings serve to decrease power use, or simply to increase power costs to consumers. Government employees who now read the disk-style meters total approximately 400 men and women in the province of British Columbia alone. Digital Smart Meters will effectively eliminate these jobs."
