I was reading my buddy's owners manual on a newer ram diesel, from the last few years. It says it burns more fuel in order to keep emissions lower. It actually says that in the manual.

That's why the newest Rams and pretty much every other manufacturer have gone to the urea injection systems. The whole lets burn more fuel to reduce emissions never really made much sense.

urea just goes after the NOx gasses in the exhaust

the whole "burn more to emit less" is for particulates where they run a DPF filter that eventually gets full and needs a regen, they use diesel to burn off the particulates that the filter catches during a regen cycle, that's where the whole "it burns more fuel to make less emissions" comes from

its pretty much job security for mechanics.

its pretty much job security for mechanics.

And the fuel that is oxidized during a regen doesn't amount to much and is only injected during a service or autoregen. Passive regens use exhaust heat only to activate the catalyst.

The big question is,when it comes to after treatment,what would you prefer,20 bucks a gallon for DEF or 5 bucks a gallon for diesel(and no extra tank or pump)?

So essentially my comment that the OEM's are using extra fuel to clean up the emissions was bang on. Yes it is in small amounts but you are still burning extra hydrocarbons to pass the sniffer test.

IMHO the DPF system is very flawed. And the manufacturers are proving this by moving towards urea. Which has another whole set of issues, of course.

btw, it isnt actually burned in the doc/dpf,rather it's oxidized
