You used to be able to go onto the Telus site and send free text messages from there, not sure if it still works though, this was a good 6-8 years ago.

Yahoo has the option in it's mail service. No idea if there's a fee involved though.

doesnt' google do that? Go into Google Labs.
It was USA only, maybe Canada's been added.
Last I checked you could do it via Rogers and Fido… not sure about other providers. Go to their website… look for something mentioning texting online, make a (free) account, start sending messages.
Should be along those lines.

The Telus free text message page only works for sending to a Telus subscriber. I've used it recently and it does work.

i synced all my contacts with gmail.
when i type in a name, all possible routes of communication come up. i can text (to a phone number), chat (to gmail), or email.
