I have an 01 GMC Sierra extcab shortbox 295hp 5.3 V8 auto, 2wd tho…20mpg all day. The worst it's ever got was 16 drivin' the hell out of it up and down the mtns in 2nd and stop[HTML_REMOVED]go combined…knock a few points off for 4wd…should be able to get 18 consistently. The Ford equivalent btw would be the 5.4 ltr and they are pigs on fuel, like the Dodge V8's…12-13mpg

First…the domestics are more than good enough…way better bang for your buck than an expensive import(Toyota/Nissan)…under 10G's…definitely go domestic
Next, you'll notice the only diesels here are big motors in big, heavy duty trucks. If you aren't pullin' huge weight regularly…skip those (you'd be hard pressed to find a decent one under 10G's anyways)
Dodge's are hardest on fuel
Ford's are fine…but meh
Chevies are fine
GMC over the equivalent Chevy…not a deal breaker, but GMC does have a slight edge in overall quality. Don't know why, it's just a fact.Chevy/GMC might get the best fuel mileage per hp/tq out of the bunch too

I'm going to disagree with almost all of this.
I assume you're moving back to the penal colony after a year, so resale value should be something to look at so that you don't lose $4-5k. Full size domestic gas trucks are pieces of shit, and the ones you spend $10k on today will be worth several thousand less a few years down the road. Compare that to the 3/4 ton dodge cummins (diesel) that I bought for $12,500 a few years back, if I were to sell it today with 35,000 more miles on it, I doubt I would lose a penny. I made money off the toyota, mazda, and nissan pickups that I have owned.
If you don't want diesel (which your only pay back will be in re-sale. The gains in fuel mileage over a full size gasser are made up my the higher price of diesel) then I would go for something like this:

The toyotas will have better mileage than similar nissans. Tundras are just about the same size as a half ton. Tacomas are essentially the hilux, but without the kick ass diesel engine.
You can get japanese imported hilux pickups if you want something familiar.

Wondering if I'm the only one that's noticed this… Whenever I sit in a GMC the steering wheel always feels off center to the right when compared to the sitting position in the seat. Doesn't matter what year, although I think it's usually a sierra. Drives me nuts.

Just buy yourself an F150 and enjoy the ride, there is a reason there is has been more of them sold than any other model in the last 20 years.
The raw, primitive, unrefined trails that see little to no maintenance are the kinds of trails that really build skill. What kind of skills do you learn riding a trail that was made by a machine, groomed to perfection and void of any rocks, roots or other obstacles that could send you careening over the handlebars?

Fords best in the bush. Get an early - mid 90s F150 with a manual gearbox/ manual hubs. Bonus points for the 300ci Straight Six.
$1500 - $2000. Leave you lots of money for beer and fuel over an overpriced toyota.

Fullsize chevy probably best mileage/power for fullsize, but they turn into jalopy shit pretty quick.
I am scoping out 2014's, my top choices in 1500.
1500 ram - Awesome vehicle great ride, reasonable pricing, nice interior, but pay load numbers make me leery, not bad gas mileage 5.7l
GMC sierra 1500 - nice, but not as good as ram, better payload tho, found to be more expensive as well. Better gas mileage 5.3l
Ford - forget it.
Toyota Tundra - outdated interior, terrible harsh ride as compared to the above. WAY over priced with what you get.
RAM is easily the winner in trucks nowadays
