SOOOOO as the title says, im looking for an iPod dock. But I have a few requirements…..

Requirements:

Quality sound- I can foresee myself having an iPod for quite some time so I dont mind forking over some decent cash if the sound quality is great.

Portable- I want to be able to take this thing camping or into the yard etc

Charges iphone even when it isnt connected to wall power(using its battery source).

So far the only dock that I have found that meets all of my requirements is the Bose Portable ipod dock but its $400

I found a sony one for $100(on sale from $150) it has 10hrs of battery life but doesnt charge the ipod/iphone when its running on the battery power. plus the sound quality wasnt great.

I may end up just going balls out and getting the Bose one because the sound quality is amazing.

Any suggestions?

I have a Soundfreaq system and I'm very pleased with the sound and quality. I like the wireless (bluetooth) feature and the fact that it could also be used with batteries. It also has radio FM.

They have a couple models that you can find suitable to your needs,

Watch FS for sales. I got mine with an extra battery and an attractive carrying case that has made me the envy of all my friends for $299. Also saw it on sale alone for $199.

Gotta say, there's a ton of hate on Bose, but this little thIng is fantastic.

One of the girls I worked with this summer had one with a solar panel for charging it when not connected to power. Sound was good, and it was loud enough to annoy the shit out of me with that dubstep crap she listened to. Thank god for noise cancelling headphones.

That's the problem with cities, they're refuges for the weak, the fish that didn't evolve.

I don't want to google this - sounds like a thing that NSMB will be better at.

Do yourself a favour and hike on over to London Drugs and give the Klipsch iGroove SXT a boo.

Bet it's at least as good as the Bose for less than half the price.

When I was looking for a unit I took my iPhone and played various types of music on all the units on display. A rep there was pretty good and helped set up some different configurations. The best sound, to me, was a Logitech system that was OK on it's own, but you could add a couple more speakers and a sub to it. Total price was a bout $300. The rep set that up as it wasn't a standard config they were selling and it's what he had at home. Sound quality was noticeably better than the Harmon Kardon or any of the Bose units (Bose units dont' sound as good as they cost).

I ended up going with a Sony unit in the kitchen (for the family). Can't remember the exact model number, but it looks similar to a couple of the units on the FS website (dock at bottom middle, some buttons on top, antenna). It wasn't that expensive - about $120. FM radio sounds is OK. iPod sound is surprisingly good for it's size and price; fairly full frequency response with a bit of punch and plenty of volume. Remote works fine too.

Audio quality is very subjective, so I'd suggest you do what I did and take your iPod down to the store and plop it into every device you're interested. Listen to a couple of known songs of different genres and decide from there what you like for sound and what also has the features you need.

^^^
I set my in-laws up with that Sony unit at Christmas. They listened to both it and a Bose, and preferred the sound of the Sony. The Sony's built in FM tuner tipped the balance because they didn't want to mess around with an internet radio app on their iPod Touch.
