The best part of the Panama Canal fiasco was the memes.

He's probably been following the Anon's or some other internet loonie libs. "Internet" was saying ww3 is a go or on if the Panama Canal had a similar issue during the same time as the Suez...

Oh, okay. I thought maybe I had missed the Suez canal getting renamed the Panama canal.

LOL.  It's funny because this things went on for like a week and it was after it was unstuck and I saw on the news the Egypt was suing over the whole mess that I finally realized it was the flipping Suez.

https://www.euronews.com/2021/04/18/belarus-lukashenko-claims-he-foiled-us-backed-coup-as-two-people-are-arrested-by-moscow

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said he foiled a US-planned, CIA-backed coup and plot to assassinate him and the top leadership of the country. Two men allegedly behind the coup attempt, one of whom has US citizenship, were arrested in Russia.

This follows Belarus and Russia signing some agreements.

Lord Hastings Lionel Ismay famously said that the North Atlantic Treaty Organization was created to “keep the Soviet Union out, the Americans in, and the Germans down.” Ismay made this remark in 1949, prior to becoming the organization’s first secretary-general in 1952. After the intervening decades of shifting geopolitical realities, it is fair to say that NATO has long outlived its initial raison d’être. The Soviet Union is gone, America’s defense concerns have shifted toward Asia, and a reunified Germany is again the dominant (economic) power in Europe. Is it time to bid this relic of the Cold War adieu?

World events have now decisively turned in Russia’s favor. The global strategic balance is shifting. China firmly has Russia’s back, as seen in recent statements by President Xi Jinping and China’s Foreign Minister. China has repelled Western regime-change pressures in Xinjiang, Hong Kong and around Taiwan. Iran has joined the Belt and Road initiative. The West was expelled from Afghanistan. Syria has somewhat stabilized.

I keep seeing this line of reasoning online where if Russia invades Ukraine it's actually the fault of the West for not listening to their threats.  M'kay.  So I have a question for you Tungsten.

Why should we give 2 shits where Russia believes our bases and allies should be?  The whole line of thinking is ridiculous.  They are one authoritarian country with a smaller GDP than Canada but you hold them up as though they are a counter to NATO which represent almost a billion people over 42 trillion in GDP.  They also control a massive piece of real estate from Europe to Asia.  Do they have some right to controlling countries outside of those borders as well to provide them with a handy shield?  Are they jealous of America's ocean moat?  Should we feel bad that countries want to join us in the free world and not their corrupt style of government?  Look how close Russia put their country to other countries!!!!

OK, that was more than one question but I feel like you give Russia way more respect than they deserve.  They are not an equal counterpart to NATO, they are a weak nation doing all they can to retain control of a region that they have kept economically weak for their own gain.  If Ukraine wants economic stability over being used as a shield to protect a has-been empire maybe they should be allowed to do so.

Side note:  Where are the Russian bases on the map and why are they so fucking close to Germany?

“Europe needs to build a collective security order on our continent. Our continent’s security requires a strategic reinforcement of our Europe as a power of peace, a balancing power, particularly in its dialogue with Russia. I have been advocating this dialogue for several years. It is not optional, for our history and our geography are stubborn, both for ourselves and for Russia. For security in our continent, which is indivisible. We need this dialogue…. What we need to build is a European order founded on principles and rules to which we have committed, and which we established not against or without Russia, but with Russia.” - French President Emmanuel Macron

"Not only will we not send the military, but if there is an escalation, we will recall every last Croatian military man. This has nothing to do with Ukraine or Russia, it has to do with the dynamics of American domestic politics." - Croatian President Zoran Milosvic

"Russian Armed Forces have not formed a strike force that would suggest that they will go on an offensive tomorrow. As of today, there is no such threat." - Ukraine Defense Minister Aleksey Resnikov

If Russia didn't have a backyard full of nukes they might have a reason to be concerned. I have more fear that Russia will do something stupid and take us to a war that will make covid seem like an all expenses paid trip to the HnB convention that anything the US/Nato might do.

Duped?  After all these years you still think I form my opinion by watching CNN?  C'mon man, I haven't even had cable since 2015.  You didn't answer my one and only question and this is all you have?

The map shows NATO expanding, but what it doesn't show is that those are all willing countries that wanted to join NATO.  Do you think I should look at it like some timeline of invasion?  To me it looks like a map of countries getting their shit together.  Russia on the other hand has actually invaded Ukraine and is posturing as though they intend to do it again.  They don't want to help Ukraine, they want a human shield.  IMO it's time to freeze the assets of the oligarchs.

So again, why should I give a shit where Putin thinks Western bases ought to be?  Do the unthinkable and use your own brain to answer a simple question.

The democratic system of government enjoyed by NATO members is the better system for everyone living under it... full stop.  Countries will keep joining us because the Russian alternative is dog shit and everyone knows it.  China is losing their shit for the exact same reason.  They don't like the fact that all their neighbors would rather have fast internet and food on the store shelves over a cult of the emperor.
