Splitting hairs don't you think? So if I drop out because I'd rather ride my bike…I'm a shithead?
no it's not splitting hairs there's a huge difference,
It's like saying a lazy and unmotivated person is unlikely to go to university. (it's true)
however if you say "anyone who doesn't go to university is unmotivated and lazy" you've instantly made an unfair generalization.

Sort of like people who stick with crossfit are 'quality people'.
Sorry, not convinced. The "quality people" statement still points to my original point.
it's one of those statements that could easily be read either way depending on your frame of thought at the time and possibly one's previous conceptions of the original poster.
i can say i know quality people that wouldn't be crossfit followers. i also agree with you that just because you don't do crossfit doesn't mean you're not a quality person.
We don't know what our limits are, so to start something with the idea of being limited actually ends up limiting us.

So what exactly is one earning? and if respect is something that is not given, the how does one get respect?
I agree respect should be earned. Through deeds or achievements. There's no clear cut method for who you respect, it is different for everyone. Who you respect is up to you, so how that person gains your respect is up to you. When someone gains my respect they become people I can depend on and people I can trust. If someone I respect criticizes me, then it is an opinion I must take into serious consideration because someone I respect is someone I would like to emulate.
Personally, if someone shows me disrespect, I rarely care. There's no time to be a cry baby over someone showing you disrespect.
