easy peasy

That hwy 5 is a good route to take in general. No high passes. Even in the winter it's usually not too bad. If it does happen to snow in may, it won't stick around long. May long weekend is the beginning of RV season, but sounds like you'll miss that too.

put the tire chains on as soon as you are off the ferry. keep them on until edmonton, also drive super slow around corners, and as fast as possible on the straights

falling asleep from boredom

the biggest danger as I see it would be the suicidal unglets which are kinda like zombies only different

As dusk approaches they are on the move , you wana drive right in the middle of the road to give ya more reaction time as they dart out from either side , scan the ditches looking for headlights reflecting off eye balls and scan those reflector's on a post if something walks in front of a relector take evassive action

actualy it could easily snow in may

edit: went to a paddlefest on the kanninaskis on a may 24th long weekend … 6"of snow

Driving conditions should be fine. Watch out for freak Winter storms, wildlife and tourons. That's a good time of year to enjoy the mountain scenery. If you're driving at night, REALLY watch out for wildlife.

That's probably why the Kanfest is in August now. The 3 Rivers Whitewater Rendezvous in Pincher Creek, AB is also known as the May Long Snofest. May in Alberta sucks (most of the time).
