I[HTML_REMOVED]#8217;ll be 90 years old soon. Soon I[HTML_REMOVED]#8217;ll be like all the others.
The time will come for all of us, but the ideas of the Cuban communists will remain as proof on this planet that if they are worked at with fervor and dignity, they can produce the material and cultural goods that human beings need, and we need to fight without truce to obtain them.

Although Cuba does not qualify as an objectively free society, it's important to recall that curtailments to Cuban freedom do not occur in a vacuum. Instead, they occur on an exposed island that has, for the duration of its contemporary history, resided in imperial crosshairs.

Given the sustained US effort to overthrow the Castro regime, and the system itself, with the help of fanatical Cuban exiles prone to terrorism and sabotage, state paranoia has perhaps not been unfounded. Repressive security measures stemming therefrom qualify as reactive in nature, and a result of vindictive US policy.

Fidel Castro in context

The CIA's outlandish plots to bump off the Cuban dictator would put 007 to shame … poison pills, toxic cigars and exploding molluscs. Once he even offered to shoot himself

“Condemn me, it does not matter. History will absolve me,” Castro famously said during his trial.

Well, that's one view of Cuba today ………

You could buy the American line ?

Either you believe the USA are the savior of the world or some people think the USA are a war like race of religious fanatics who had their fingers in stuff all up and down central [HTML_REMOVED] south America?

Look at what was going on in Latin America back in the 50's and where are those countries tries now, what was the American imperialist agenda, what about Batista the American instaled dictator that was ousted by fidel and some of his buddies with their hunting rifles?

lol - maybe the tourists at the all-inclusive resorts.

Geography is fate. It was both Castro’s curse as well as his blessing that the U.S. was so near. It was easy to banish his opposition and send it packing across the Florida Straits. Or, to put it another way, it is unlikely that, after Castro’s demise, unmarked mass graves will be found filled with the remains of opponents who had been made to disappear. Cuba is not Chile under Pinochet or Argentina under the generals. Or Iraq under Saddam Hussein. Or Russia under Stalin. Those of his critics who have inflated their rhetoric to the heights of hyperbole do a disservice to actually understanding the more complicated reality and character of the revolt Castro mounted and the revolution he made.
