The House approved legislation on Friday to keep the government open past Sept. 30, but also to eliminate funding for "Obamacare."

..

The posturing by the Republican-controlled House means Washington now faces a narrow window of opportunity to reach an ever-elusive consensus over how to continue government operations, and avoid a politically-costly shutdown.

GOP at it again. Some part of me thinks I should be surprised that a party filled with Christian fundamentalists isn't for a social safety net in the form of (not quite) universal health care…. but then I remember that it's a party of brainwashed morons controlled by rich white racists.

Congressman who gets millions in farm subsidies accuses food stamp recipients of stealing other peoples money

The average monthly food stamp benefit is $133 per person, or $275 per household. And a lot of those people are children and seniors.

It's like watching someone shoot themselves in the foot in slow motion… my bet is that this will go all the way to a shutdown, further damage the US's credit ratings and end in the Republicans capitulating and subsequently having their asses handed to them in the mid-terms.

The public is already tired of their 40 odd attempts to repeal Obamacare, particularly because the law isn't that unpopular. When people are polled about 'Obamacare' as a whole it's usually pretty unpopular (low to mid forties), however when people are polled about the individual pieces of Obamacare, like the removal of lifetime caps and the pre-existing conditions rule, it's incredibly popular (60 percent plus approval).

Republicans are viewing this as their last attempt at repeal before the law comes into effect because once the benefits kick in, it'll be impossible to convince people that it's a boogeyman.

Not really related but then again, in a way it is. The other night I listened to a radio feature on my way home in the car, and it was about J.J. Sullivan, author of Pulphead, a book on the Tea Party Movement. And it was truly an insight, he simply said that the US is fucked up beyond belief, and that sometimes he is rather pessimistic since in his opinion the original idea of the US government is still valid, but is lost in today's politics and lobbyism, and that the US american society is paranoid beyond good and evil.

He mentioned a chat on a flight with another American, who said that she has a gun in her house in case anybody wanted to enter her house without her consent, and that this woman was scared of the socialism in Obama's politics, he said he just gave up on her at that moment. He said that you cannot really argue with people like that, full of hatred and anger and fear of change.

City Recognizes Right To Not Own Guns, Agrees To Not Enforce Ordinance

WASHINGTON, DC –The Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence and the City of Nelson, Georgia have agreed to settle the Brady Center’s lawsuit against the City’s mandatory gun ownership ordinance. Under the settlement, which the City Council unanimously approved at its Tuesday meeting, the City will amend the ordinance to make clear that the Constitution protects the individual right to maintain a gun-free home. The amended statute will say that the gun ownership mandate cannot be enforced and that there will be no penalties for non-compliance.

if i lived in the US i'd probably be angry and scared all the time too. place is f'd up

Obamacare is extremely unpopular. My health coverage is expected to do one of two things in the next couple years thanks to Obamacare, either have a rate increase, or suffer less coverage. My company already provides the best benefits of any private employer in the county, yet we will suffer so that the deadbeats who we pay to have sit at home all day can eat themselves to death and have the rest of us flip the bill for their health insurance.

That's the problem with cities, they're refuges for the weak, the fish that didn't evolve.

I don't want to google this - sounds like a thing that NSMB will be better at.

Read this. Now think about your father, and then think what about healthcare?

My bets are you wont…

From the pockets of those that work for a living.

the sad part is that he has a valid point,in having to pitch in for the healthcare of folks that don't/won't take care of themselves. not such an evident problem in Canada, but I can see how one would recoil from socialized care down there

People that don't look after themselves don't get the same options that people that do… Yes filtering happens.
