Looking for a new laptop but picking one is like picking deodorant or a toothbrush at Save-On. Too many options.
Price limit is $500. Netbooks considered.
Emphasis on cpu, ram, and min 12" screen.
Less important are hd capacity, optical drives.
Indifferent on gpu but it would be nice to sneak in a couple of frags when i'm bored.

yea lots of talk on os's and general info on who has what brand. i'm looking for more comprehensive info like which model, what its used for, and price.
go to nantron systems on first and nanaimo. Its where I bought my laptop, and my parents bought both of their computers. best customer service. period. better proces than futureshop et al. the guys there can barely speak english, but my parents have had virus' wipe out their comp several times, harddrives, just about anything you can think of (they kept the came computer going from 2000 untill just before christmas 2009) and $30 later, everything is fixed. unless teh guys though it took too long (more than a day or 2) then it was free.
no first hand advise on stuff in that price range, but my buddy got an acer netbook that had basically the same as my laptop as far as ram, processor etc goes and it was less than half the price. worth looking into.

Just got my ASUS UL30VT-X1 for $900 and it's a deal when you compare it to a MacBook Pro 13" but almost 2x your price range.
How important is battery life and size/weight for you?
A Mac isn't just a product… it's a lifestyle.
I don't understand why people who want a netbook want a powerful CPU with lots of ram? It's a tiny computer, if you want something powerful get a desktop. Netbooks are not made for gaming or any heavy computation. They are best for internet-ing and word documents.
Look at getting a bigger hdd is more important than having your 4 gb of ram or a quad-core running at 12 GHz.
netbooks are a waste of money, IMO. been using one for a while, it's a waste of time. Ever try typing on one? it's a total pain in the ass. I get carpal tunnel from trying to use the damned petite track pad too. you're better off to get a 13" lappy, pay a bit more, get way more processing power, a decent sized keyboard, CDROM and roughly the same battery life.

It might be slightly over your budget, but check out the Acer Timeline series, or the msi x-slim. Both run low power CPU's. I find that most of the time, I don't need super computing power unless I'm doing stuff with matlab, but for everyday use, I mostly surf the net, or write documents etc.
You can get like 7 hours of battery life, though it might not be able to palyback full HD.

i had hp mini and keyboard big enough for my big hands. its almost as big as full size keyboard. i believe its 90%

I agree. Find a reeally thin/lightweight one with good battery life. Those are the things bad about my laptop and it pisses me off.
