Oldest son is turning 8 in a couple of weeks and R/C buggy is at the top of his wish list. I don't know much about these, so looking for some input.

We don't know what our limits are, so to start something with the idea of being limited actually ends up limiting us.

I'm not sure what the LHS situation is in NVan but it's become an unfortunate reality the BestBuy is actually a reasonable place to buy what I'd call Intro hobby grade RC stuff. Namely, the Traxxas brand offers a good selection of vehicles, and BestBuy typically has a good selection of spare parts.

The Titan motor is pretty reliable (with a bit maintenance) and the XL5 ESC offers a reduced top speed mode while he learns about controlling it.

I'd also recommend the first major upgrade you might want to consider would to get rid of the NiMH batteries and switch to LiPo. Means getting a better charger and the batts cost a bit more but the cars will run faster with longer run times and the batts will last longer before wearing out (if they cared for properly).

Been through this with my boys. Make sure you get something waterproof, guarantee he'll wanna run it through a puddle. I got my boy an ECX Ruckus 1/18th and it's pretty awesome. 4 wheel drive, pretty quick on a the OEM battery, decent parts availability. I would say get an extra battery and/or a faster charger than the one they come with.
The biggest drawback is that if you have to replace anything its hard to work on as it's so small. Flipside is that he doesn't have this giant 1/10th scale truck to lug around.

I've got an old Traxxas Rustler nitro trophy truck, if it wasn't in such poor shape I would offer it up. Electric is definitely the way to go these days.
So far the WaveRunner RTR is in the lead for jr. $149 bucks at Metrotown shop, and comes with battery, charger and transmitter.

Stay with the Traxxas for a beginner. Upgradable and replacement parts are available with ease.
I get all my RC stuff from RC Pitstop in Langley. Those boys know there RC and might have a better beginner unit to offer.

I have one of these and enjoy crawling as opposed to zero to yard sale in 3 seconds
2wd buggies and trucks are fun if you have a good track to race or wide open places. They get a bit boring ripping up and down the road. If you want to be able to wander around on trails and such stick with a 4wd trail truck or crawler. Scale trucks are fun to play with when walking with the kids.
Brushed motors are fine when you are just getting into the game. Brushless motors and LiPo batteries are next level but cost a few bucks. When you start getting into messing with electronics it can get really expensive. I have a 2wd brushless Traxxas Slash and it is fast and fun for ripping on tracks but is useless everywhere else. My GMade R1 Crawler is for walks with the kids and bashing in the bushes. The crawlers is good for kids because it's not to fast, and I have a lot of fun with it finding lines when the kids get bored.

These crawlers do seem pretty cool, and after showing kiddo a video he seems pretty keen. What would be a decent starter crawler under $200ish with all the fixings?
That's a pretty tall order. I'm not sure there's anything worth buying in that budget range, at least as far as easily repairable/hobby grade stuff.
Axial Wraith starts around $400.00USD + shipping + batteries + charger.
Traxxas Summit (not exactly a crawler but can crawl and run trails) is about $900.00
I think 4WD trail/scale truck might be easier to find closer to that budget.
Redcat racing stuff isn't terrible and is a bit more affordable than the Traxxas, Axial etc…
