From what I can tell, members of BCTF administration can make more than teachers.

I'll just get it out of the way now and mention that my wife is a teacher. A T.O.C. actually. So yes, I suppose I am somewhat biased and I do have a front row seat for this nonsense.

Here is my 2 cents for what its worth.

Scrap the classroom condition bullshit. It is very likely to be upheld when it goes to court for the last time in January and the Fiberals will be forced to revert anyway. Not only that, parents should be fighting that front. No sense martyring yourself for others while they sit and do fuck all.

Drop the $5000 signing bonus. It looks awful to the public. In all honesty, from a wage perspective, the last offer wasn't too shabby. Unfortunately, the public eye is skewed from union support these days. There was a time when most jobs offered good benefits, 2 weeks holiday and a pension. Most of the public has lost that in our new "capitalist utopia" and they tend to hate the few that have managed to retain it.

The bigger issue here is the government fucking with the people. Twice they have been found guilty of breaking the law by tearing up a contract and they just carry on with no regard for law. What do you think would happen if you did that to employees? How has it that we are able as people, to just accept this? Not only accept it but you PAY for it! People should stand behind them for that alone. Who knows when you are next.

I think two big reasons for our behaviour in regards to the above are:

1) The majority of people believe they are better than the average (fancy word: Illusory Superiority)

2) There was a study that showed we are happier when we aren't last. As long as someone is poorer than us, we feel better about ourselves (for a fleeting moment). (I'm pretty sure I came across this in Thinking, Fast and Slow, but can't find it right now).

While we continually fool ourselves into thinking we'll be cracking the $500,000 a year salary bracket, the sociopaths who have no qualms with lying and cheating their way to the top can grab the reins pretty easily and take it all while we fight amoungst ourselves.

I wonder how long it will be for the Scandanavian countries to join our spiral downwards until the next great revolution.

There are a lot of workers - I would venture to say the majority of workers - in this province that deal with their employers face to face yet don't air their grievances in public with the expectation that other people will help fight their battle. They also don't take actions that inconvenience/disrupt others to a large degree and do so with impunity.

No childcare for me.

Just tired of a group whining every couple years about how special they are. If they want to be part of the collective and get support from the public then they should get salary increases like the rest of the public sector employees. Acting all butt hurt every couple years is terrible, and is also incredibly ironic for a group that touts themselves as roll models. Just what we want students to learn - if you can't get your way then you pull a tantrum.

Who is throwing a tantrum?

….and who is breaking the law and ignoring a court ruling (for the second time)?

….and its ROLE model, swtich….if your teacher wasnt busy herding 35 or so kids, you might have learned that difference.

I have stayed out of this thread for the whole time as it is so rife with conflict. Its almost of abortion debate proportion. Everyone seems to be strongly to one side or the other. Very little middle ground.

First off (in my eyes) class composition shouldn't be a teacher issue. Yes it makes their job more difficult and the kids lose out no doubt. That is for parents to fight for. They are YOUR kids, its YOUR government, YOU get out and effect change. Teachers manage what they are given. That's their job. They irony of the above statement is that teachers are fighting a parents battle in that regard. Parents make up "the majority of workers" in the province. They should be out there fighting for better conditions for their kids.

Teachers have been trying to deal with a government (face to face as you say) that has refused to deal with them for 12 years. It has come to a head and unfortunately, the only card they have to play is strike. Which in the end, works against them as the government saves a boatload while teachers starve.

If its extra burden on you as a parent having to source childcare, trust me, the burden around here is awful too. We have to foot childcare too while she heads to a picket line for no pay. Its been a very lean month around these parts and I can tell you she and 99% of her colleagues would much rather be finishing up their classes and attending grad ceremonies than standing on a roadside waving to cars.

I agree that some of the teacher demands are over the top, $5000 signing bonus comes to mind but most of it is legit. A teacher tops out at around 80 g's without hitting management. That's the PEAK of their career. Really? For the bullshit they deal with?

When was the last time a co worker approached you and told you their dad was raping them? How about the co worker that wanted to talk to you because they need to find a reason not to kill themselves? How about the co worker that can't afford to eat every day and asks for some of your lunch out of sheer desperation. How about the fact that a teacher will spend more time with your child in their most important formative years than you will. Doesn't the Guberment always tell us that they pay the big bucks to their people because "they want to attract the best!" Does your job require you to be in the office 24/7 as you are a representative of the company whether in the office or not?

Teachers are like cops in the sense that they tend to be a certain breed of people and they tend to hang out with their own as well. Living with it first hand and hearing all about it, I can tell you, no one in teacher town is happy right now. In any sense. Matter of fact I have been working very hard to persuade my wife to a different career path because no matter what, people like you (no offense intended) will ever appreciate what she does. Its an awful job but unfortunately for her, she is one of those "certain breed" people and will stay. Its in her unfortunate nature.

i'm with tacklebox on this one. my daughter just graduated, and her education experience has been beyond amazing. it takes a village, and the teachers who have been a part of that have contributed enormously to an amazing group of young adults.

they have been great role models for the most part, and have gone above and beyond, especially this past month to make sure that her class finished school on a positive note. the hours, days, months, years put in deserves more than pay and good working conditions. i feel they deserve our, and the government's respect.

imo it really has little to do with the teachers, and what i see being wrong with unions, is they really don't represent the actual teachers very well. they have their own agenda, and neither the teachers or kids being are the ones to benefit.
