How do they prove that a diamond is conflict-free?

The diamonds are laser-etched with a serial number and a logo. For most Canadian diamonds, the logo is a polar bear (they're mined in the way north) or a maple leaf.

On delivery, you get a certificate with a s/n matching the etched number, with full description of the diamond - size, shape, weight, grading and list of inclusions.

Edit: also, buying from a known ethical dealer helps, rather than some backdoor place that looks like a set from the movie 'Snatch'.

the last time I got married we had a ring made using the diamonds taken out of the ring from her first marriage and then the jeweller forgot to bill us for the ring

Although they don't have a huge online store, Harlings Jewellers might be one to consider and I think they have a store in Victoria. They got their start doing insurance replacement, so they have a lot of experience with custom ring designs and can do ones that look exactly like a major manufacturer.

When I decided 2 weeks before a trip to Mexico that I was going to propose I was in a panic for a ring. A friend recommended them. I went downtown on a Friday afternoon. They were almost closing, but brought me in, offered me a beverage and walked through different designs. Then let me choose the diamond. Everything was done within a week and much cheaper than anywhere else for the quality of product I received.

Not sure if they still do the same business. It's been a while since I've been a free man. But might be worth looking into.

Back in the day Mrs. WH accepted a full XT first generation Cannondale Jekyl as her wedding ring and then stuck with a simple silver band. I think that's why we're still together today.
