In the 1970s average people weren't qualified for credit cards, if they bought an ATV they had one and fixed it when it broke, cell phones weren't invented yet, the internet was confined to three universities, and most of our manufacturing was done within the shores of North America. The world has changed, and some of those changes have added bills that people conveniently forget when they talk about the quality of life that they "need".

but I would say the problem is that a house IS an investment not just somewhere to stow your shit because investment got in the way of everyman owning his house but that's just how it is
