“At a certain point, I’ve just concluded that for me personally it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same-sex couples should be able to get married,” Mr. Obama told ABC News in an interview that came after the president faced mounting pressure to clarify his position.

wow.

Good on him. This could get ugly.

Do you think Biden's comment a few days earlier was staged to test the waters or do you think this was a response to said comment?

While good on Obama there is a difference between Obama the man and what Obama the president must do.

Still, a step in the right direction.

I think they should ban marriage.

Freedom of contract. We sell them guns that kill them; they sell us drugs that kill us.

While it's a good sign, praising a leader for taking as stand like this is like praising William Lyon Mackenzie King for closing Japanese Canadian internment camps in the 40s, the US Supreme Courts for allowing inter-racial marriages in '67, or the forward thinking South African government of ending Apartheid in 1990. It's an embarrassment that it was ever an issue, and ending it common sense, not 'news'.

It does my head in that the opinions of the uneducated, homophobic, bigoted, douchebag segment of any population trump the rights of a minority, especially when it's those same rights that allow them to be uneducated, homophobic douchebags in the first place. Fucking hypocrites.

Yeah, but that's NC…

The NC vote last night had everything to do with allowing him to make the statement, because it banned not only same-sex marriage but even same-sex civil unions.

Still it's a brave move and good on him.

Globe and Mail Dec 12, 1967 and then famously paraphrased by Trudeau.

"Obviously, the state's responsibility should be to legislate rules for a well-ordered society. It has no right or duty to creep into the bedrooms of the nation."

I really hope that in 20 (maybe that's still pretty optimistic… 50?) years' time we as a society are going to look back at this whole gay marriage/gay rights issue like we look back at things like slavery and women's suffrage and wonder what the hell we were thinking by opposing it. To me it seems painfully obvious that these rights should be extended to all members of society, but these old school socially conservative politicians, religious groups and their ilk still feel the need to get in the way. I applaud Obama for finally standing up for this, but I unfortunately don't think it will help his popularity much.

Sometimes America has to be dragged forward kicking and screaming. Good on Obama.

Yep. This is SO _non-an-issue _that I am surprised this even enters current civilized conversations.

Backwards rednecks. The "institution" of marriage is not the "biblical concept". Get state and church involved in pulbic policy and yer f*cked. Add finance into that mix and you've got what's commonly known as 'the red states'.
