Unless you need a different style of vehicle or are going to buy something new (or near new) keeping what you've got is the best option.

More info would help but it sounds like your truck is worth fixing. Since you haven't mentioned diesel it's probably the 6.0/4l80e combo in a 2500, solid and cheap to maintain.

Tires and shocks are regular wear items. If they're done replace them.

Rattling could be lots of things. First thing I would check is exhaust heat shields, crawl under there and see if anything is loose (obviously do this when the truck is cold). Does your parking brake work? Cables/linkage could be mangled, especially if things were rusted up and someone stomped the pedal.

The "Needs gearbox service" is the only scary part. Based on what?

Clunk into gears as in:

1) Putting it into drive or reverse?

Probably worn out u-joint(s), check joint at the rear diff first.

2) Shifting between gears?

Could be lots of things: Sticking apply pistons, inconsistent line pressure, clutch pack is damaged. Honestly you need a professional with a high end scan tool that can read GM transmission codes to really figure out what's going on.

What you can check though is fluid level and condition, start with the basics.

Also for what it's worth, lots of older GM trucks have a hard 1-2 shift when the trans is cold, not necessarily an imminent problem if it goes away when things heat up.

Replaced a 4L80 last week. 2wd 2500 Express Van. Parts and labour $3200. Might be a bit more labour on 4wd because of the T-case. Those ATs have problems so most dealers will have at least one in stock.

This whole thing smells like a conspiracy to keep diesels out of N/A..

People are crying over the emissions levels of these small passenger cars yet completely ignore all the lumbering behemoth single occupant fullsize suvs and pickups emitting 3-4 times as much.. maybe not nox since thats pretty diesel specific, but the nox from passenger cars in europe hasnt seemed to affect them too much.

Well clearly I'm out of the loop, I just remember the early 90s in germany being way more polluted than it is now. Probably more to do with all the coal people were still heating their homes with than diesel emissions.

I still feel like all the outrage is misplaced, but I drive a fuel guzzling machine myself so who am I to judge.

Vw cheated the nox emissions which are reduced by burning the fuel leaner and more retarded which also reduces particulates so that whole meme is a fail
