Nexus 5 FTW.
Big diff between any old Android and the flagship Google phone. Go with the latter, and you get all the updates first, no bloatware, and no worries. The hardware will let you down before the software does: just use a good case. Maybe not as shparkly and wafery as some of the Aphole phones, but I have never had so much as a glitch. Cheaper by $300 at the time as well.
Not sure what the current flagship is, but I think the N5 is still great.

I'm on a 2yr old HTC One mini as I'm slowly turning into a luddite. It does what I need it to do and its HDR camera is beyond decent for a mini. Only heard good or better things about the newer HTC's. With the Otterbox (commuter case, not defender) it's been dropped about once a month and only had to power itself down once while opting for a bug report. Also, rebooting has fixed a frozen cam lens after dropping it good at least three times. Not saying it's self healing but I thought I lost the use of my camera zoom thrice. Still works.

Newer ones are worth some consideration imo.

One more point to add. The main reason I hated my iPhone was no LED to indicate a missed call or text message!!! Arrrrgh that drove me nuts! Maybe the new ones have one?

Don't want to brag, but I just got Marshmallow for my S6 a week or so ago.

Only a year and a bit to get it to me after release. Such a well oiled machine.

That's Rogers. They suck for service.
