Another vote for NCIX. They have a good comprehensive website, up-to-date website as well as a very wide inventory. Return/refund policy is somewhat restrictive (compared to Futureshop with 30-day-no-questions-asked), and for extra $$$ you can also buy extended warranties (which covers things like accidental damage) which are handled through 3rd party. Also very fast delivery, but you pay shipping …

I used NCIX to build my desktop last Feb. Walked into thr Langley store with my parts list and was home building in about an hour. Now i'm just curious why you wan to spend what appears to be a lot of money on a laptop? For less then a grand you can build a pretty beastly desktop.

Why yes I did.

So I'm after a new laptop as my current one was bought cheaply 7 years ago and is running like a arthritic 70yr old

I saw no explanation as to why a laptop, other than "I want one"

Now i'm just curious why you want to spend what appears to be a lot of money on a laptop?

I'm just curious as to why he wants to spend what looks like a boat load of cash on a laptop, when the same amount of money can get a desktop that will out perform and outlast the coffee table version.

I think for most people, if they own a single computer, its generally now a laptop. Second computer tends to be a desktop (most likely a gaming rig). It used to be the reverse in the past. So many pros for laptops such as portability and small footprint. If you are doing web surfing, watching videos/movies, basic office productivity etc you can get by on a fairly basic laptop. A lot of people (myself included) buy home desktops for high-performance gaming (built up from parts ordered online).

For a lot of people, tablets are becoming the primary device for general email/surfing/videos, with a laptop as the secondary machine for tasks that are more efficient with a proper keyboard and mouse.

I've had good luck with refurbished HP laptops from Future Shop.

Laptop = portability

Macs = GTFO…they won't run many of the software packages I wanna use and Im not paying a 50% premium for 50% of the functionality of a Windows machine :-)

(And I've already got a pretty reasonable desktop so don't really need another…)

As to whether I need to drop such a large sum, my budget ia

Any decent new laptop will have USB 3.0, WiFi n, etc.

If huge battery life isn't a requirement, get the quad core i7 as it's about 80 to 80 percent of the speed of a desktop processor. Memory can be upgraded. Get a laptop with a 7mm HD that can be easily was pled out for an SSD. Get discrete graphics. Get a decent display panel. And make sure the touchpad isn't glitchy and the keyboard layout is functional for you.

For $1000, you can get all that.

Hey guys… just gonna raise the dead here.

I bought a Lenovo g700 for 500 bucks from Memory Express.

What are the things I can do to make Windows 8 awesome? I don't have a touch screen (wasn't willing to shell the extra bucks and look at finger prints all day, and wanted to look at a 17 inch screen when I'm being lazy and watching netflix in bed).

Do I still need antivirus software to watch porno? I like to, and I never required it with my mac.

This is the first windows computer I've had in over a decade - I jumped on the apple band wagon early, just didn't want to pay the apple tax for the equivalent case/screen - especially considering all I actually do these days is surf the net, watch netflix, email, facebook, etc. I used to be heavy into photography, but I'm not anymore and don't need the same media functionality. Also, I think they're doomed without Jobs.

Any helpful anything about windows 8 would be appreciated.

Upgrade to Win 8.1.

Run Windows Defender.

Windows Classic Shell makes Win 8 look just like Win7 (i.e. traditional start menu).

After upgrading to 8.1, you can configure it to boot right to the desktop, so you never have to deal with the "Metro" interface if you don't want to.
