Most dangerous hikes - seriously?

I saw an elderly lady go up in loafers and a cardigan passing people. There is no danger at all other than the fact its so easy and popular you get a bunch of out of shape idiots going up the same trail as a bunch of fitness douches.

I didn't wear flip flops, but I also didn't bother lacing up my skate shoes for the slow pace set by my outdoor enthusiast friends. Not exciting.

I suspect that whomever wrote that for Outside, has never actually been outside.

I think the writer was just writing the artical based on a body count but in any case its way more dangerous not doing going outside and hiking

Inactivity …the silent killer

couple years ago I ran a shuttle for a couple of outside writer/editors on the babine and they were into more than the outdoor grill at a Granville island restaurant

My favourite was a few years ago when I ran into a very sharply-dressed (think a dress and a suit) Asian tourist couple resting their designer shoe-clad feet. Wearily one of them looked up at me as I passed, and asked in very broken English "Much further?"

I could see the "1/4 Way" spot ahead 100 meters.

3 people have died since 1999, 2 were heart attacks! Sound's really dangerous and scary that! I know it's a gongshow up there but these stupid storie's keep coming. It's raining, quick let's close the grind.

And the third died climbing in the winter when the trail was closed for the season.

Ride, don't slide.

There was no such thing as a winter closure on the grind before the avalanche killed the poor hiker. People did and still do use it all year long. The lawsuit that followed the death is what gave us the gate and trail closure's.

2 people died from heart attacks, but there are dozens of heart attacks on the Grind in the summer months. We just end up saving the fortunate ones in the Cath Lab at SPH.

Maybe the article should qualify why it is dangerous. Perhaps, there are more emergency responses due to unprepared hikers, partly because of the accessibility of the trail. It certainly shouldn't be deemed dangerous due to the trail itself- I can think of a lot worse ones in BC alone, with loose grades, exposure, remoteness etc.

If they qualified the number of deaths as a percentage of the number of ascents made I guarantee it would be considered on of the safest hikes around. Hundreds of people climb that thing daily I'd bet.
