In their defense, being racist is only one of a number of things terribly wrong with people who take Miss America pageants seriously.

How are pageants still relevant. My friend who works for woman rights for the state said they were good for being positive female roll models. I countered with the idea that if people think that it's sad some people think this is an acceptable female roll model.

There are many women doing things in the world that are amazing. Why don't we let the girls in porn wear the bikini's and take them off, and leave real roll modeling to girls more deserving.

Same for athletes, movie stars etc. Why should they be role models? What qualifies them for that? They are just people. Some of them, for example, possess extraordinary abilities and talents, but what does that have to do with being a decent human being? Zero. How about the parents who take the time teach their kids about humility, decency and generosity while working their asses off so their kids can have every possible advantage in life? Those are some real role models. Are Sidney Crosby or Peyton Manning really that relevant as "role models"?

Only 7% of Americans use Twitter, and only a small portion of that 7% tweeted about the pageant. In order to compare apples to apples you need to figure out how many of the tweets about the pageant were racist and then extrapolate that.

Who am I kidding though, if I was wearing the same rose-coloured glasses as you, I wouldn't want anything to threaten that. Ignorance is bliss.

There are dumb ass hicks everywhere. Unfortunately there is no IQ test for logging onto the Interwebz, as is painfully obvious in the NBR section of this great forum.

Every mother fucker in the US has a smart phone, so lots of people with easy access to spew stupidity. Anyone who thinks that this is how even a small portion of the US feels, is way off base. I can't say that it didn't make me go hmmm for a minute when I saw the results in an article talking about the racist tweets. Then I remembered that nobody with a brain gives a fuck about pageants or what a bunch brain dead couch surfers have to say about the results.

IMO, It's refreshing to see someone saying this ^^ as opposed to either denying that there is a problem or diminishing the extent of the problem. Just because it's a minority opinion, the lack of acknowledgment and the lack of people responding to and/or condemning that opinion can give the false impression that that opinion is much more broadly accepted.
