New or from the discount warehouse?

Both from their store on Broadway, near Main Street. I'm not sure if their store is still there or has moved.

Very pleased with my Essentia Dormeuse - comes in just under 5 as the OP wanted, if you add an extra zero. All natural and organic rubber memory foam.

Really really like our Serta mattress.

They have a factory in Burnaby so if you care about supporting local jobs and manufacturing that is a plus.

Ours is a version of their high end hotel mattress.

Ermm - foam?

I had a medium foam Twin for years - topped with mem foam. Well under $500 and very comfy

A lady friend has a bamboo mattress, by far the best mattress I've slept on. Pretty pricy but I
think you can occasionally find them on sale or on amazon for somewhere around your budget.

5 K could buy a lot of toys, IME it was either buy bikes/skis/kayaks or furniture since I can sleep any where I slept on a futon from the family room for many years and when my kid moved out to get married he left a bed in his room from somewhere … works fine

Gotta agree - I like a firm mattress and foam is by far the most comfortable IMO. Obviously a lot cheaper too. With a 10 year guarantee.

I'd certainly recommend checking them out.

I don't think it's that crazy. We spend over a third of our lives in bed and our quality of sleep has a direct relationship with our quality of life. It makes sense to me to buy the best bed you can afford while paying attention to the law of diminishing returns of course.

We stayed with some wealthy friends here once and I don't know what kind of mattress we slept on but I've never had such a good night's sleep. Felt much better and more energetic than usual the next day as well.

You can't put a price on that.

Stay away. I still have an owing legal settlement for $2500 with Sofa King Fly By Night Furniture Warehouse. I never expect to see the money (or the other half of our bedroom set they sold to someone else.

Go to Sleep Country.

Sofa King … BAD!!

Sofa King SoFucking Bad.

Skylar Brower was his name. Fa k him if you ever run into him at a furniture store that has very simple displays and look like they could pack everything up and be gone the next day.

^ My vote would be 100% latex with removable wool outer.

I moved into a new place recently and planned to set up a second bedroom with a cheap-ish bed.

Making the mistake of trying out the high end stuff cost me a couple $k as I was blown away by the natural latex. It was worth every penny though as I have been getting much better quality sleep ever since.

The sealy pillowtop I used to think was awesome is now in the guest bedroom.

If I had a 5000$ mattress, I would lose sleep thinking about the 400$/yr that money could be earning me.
