Rat gets it.
Don't really on some Scout bs to teach them stuff. Go do it yourself.

i've heard of this….they call it good parenting
http://www.educo.ca/adventureschool.php They break you down and you build yourself back up, the good way not the military way.
I recommend putting them in Scouts/Guides…on one condition.
You and/or your wife have to go to the meetings and get involved.
If you're going to be one of those parents who just chauffers the grom to and from the meetings,I'll drive down there and punch you in the throat.
This for sure!!
I was a Beaver leader for a year and my wife also did it for a year, and I can say the most annoying thing is all the parents that treat it as a cheap babysitting service! Most parents dont want to do ANYTHING to help out with the group.
Having said that it is also important to not helicopter parrent and let them have some room to grow up and have social interaction on their own.

single best way is to lead by example
you don't have the skills that you want to teach them? figure it out together maybe?
don't let your kids get sucked into a shitty urban iphone existence (i kid)

If the whote got involved in the scouts as well, they could teach him how to tie knots and use a compass and pitch a tent….(scratch that last one,not appropriate in a post about boy scouts)…at the same time his kid does.

Thanks guys. Seriously some great stuff.
I know full well that one must lead by example. I am hoping to become less dumb and pass less dumb stuff on.
I am hoping to include some kids programs in the mix
My daughter getting in to hockey was great. Now I'm playing twice and week and coaching a few times as well.
this space is intentionally blank, other than this note about it being blank.

Hey, you still running?
btw…get the groms out of the city every once in a while, even if its just driving up the valley and finding a place to go hike around and explore.

I want my kids to grow up knowing how to survive a few days if lost in the woods, find the big dipper, know what a wrench is (and maybe even how to use it)
I know the real answer. I have to learn that shit and pass it on… But should I have them in scouts or are they brainwashing kids and telling em to hate gays and gypsys?
Don't know about the Scouts and stuff. With Gabi alot is stuff she simply has seen daddy do.
Gabi almost 2 years ago watched me reinstall my front wheel. Left to put laundry in the dryer and when I came back she had figured out how to put in the allen tool. 3 weeks ago she had gone on her own .. put the valve in the valve hole and had carefully tucked the inner tube into the tire as it should be. All while I was helping the wife move the couch.
Kids are smarter then us parents ever give them credit for.
And sometimes because we know kids won't do things because it's mommy and daddy communicating. We have to step back.
I agree with others as kids do what they see parents do. If they see daddy bringing bike, car, lawnmower etc to the shop everytime something doesn't work right then that is what they are going to do. If daddy is too scared to get his hands dirty then so is junior. Its never too late to learn things and what better way to learn than with your kids. Most parents think they need to be a super solid figure in front of thier kids so they don't do anything unless they are a super star at it so a lot of the time the kids see daddy doing nothing at all.
I'm the best at being modest !

hahah…wow and nice…
thanks for sharin….cool little person you got there.
Beavers was all about, "sharing, sharing, sharing".
Cubs was about, "doing our best" and playing floor hockey. Didn't learn any outdoorsy stuff and the only badge I ever earned was for home-making.
Soon as I hit boy scouts, it was all about the great outdoors and camping every weekend. By that time I just want to play video games - maybe if my Dad had gotten involved more I would have gotten into it as it rands, I have no idea how to start a fire unless I have some butane.
So to echo others, it depends on the group. Personally, I would rather have my kids hanging out with Scouts than the skids down at 7-11…
Oh, and that book looks awesome.
send him to work on a farm or similar in the summer.
Everyone has their skills. Me, I am a master at Internet sarcasm
However, I am completely lacking in mechanical and heck, other life skills

I always thought boy scouts was the lamest thing ever until I found out that there were rock climbing trips involved. Joined in fifth grade and through the trips I was introduced to rock climbing, kayaking, mountain biking, skiing and other things that were completely foreign to my family members.
The brainwashing is very subtle and easy for a smart kid to resist. Plus it only came from a few of the leaders that I knew to avoid. Quit after a few years once I had more friends and a different support network to make trips to Tahoe etc.
Some very lame things in scouts but definitely a good way to be introduced to the outdoors.
take something apart and then put it back together. if it doesn't work the same find out why and fix it, thanks to the internet this is a lot easier now.
