Looks like the Coquihalla will be closed for the winter.

In all seriousness though, many structures on hwy 5 were built around some serious geotechnical challenges, successfully. The big issue now with winter approaching will be the hangfire above the startpoints. This aint gonna be easy.

Build jumps?

I know it looks bad but it won’t be all winter. a shit show for sure. Not sure anyone wants to be in Merrit right now anyway.

I dunno, trying to rebuild that much infrastructure through the winter is not going to be easy, especially if we get more significant rain events.

Yes, after seeing some better footage the highway is fucked and will likely get worse if that footing continues to get undermined. The lower mainland is now separated from the rest of Canada. Quebec, eat your heart out. 😂

Normaly you could still go around thru the excited states but that might be problematic with covid

Truck container traffic will be stalled,

I wonder if the rail lines are OK ?

did that all come down as rain or is there snow up high ?

The railway line thru Coquihalla was closed way before the Highway was constructed. There are two lines thru the Fraser though, so I guess at least one of them is or was closed because of the mudslides in the Fraser canyon...

Let's hope there weren't many trucks carrying bikes or parts on the Coquihalla! 😉

There's major pipeline work on the Coquihalla as well.... that's gonna be badly disrupted. Hopefully crews are safe.

Bummer for the trails in that area as well. Guess they'll be gone for good.

did the Wetsuet en shut down the CN main at Hazelton ? that would mean be no east bound rail traffic of any kind

Nope. And you know damn well that shit wont fly given current conditions.

probably just spot closures

edit: BUT actualy how it goes is that it doesnt matter how much anger you exhibit, when 25 cousins/ brothers/ aunties/ nephews thro up a blockade on hy 16 and/ or the CN mainline, the 2 johnny laws on duty can't really do anything cuz there are too many citizens for a couple guys to deal with

First thing they do is call a superiour to tell them what to do next. They will need a whole bunch more johnny laws to clear out that family which could take days or even weeks, maybe the Wetsuet en will stick it out and get arrested or maybe just disperse when it looks like they are gona get arrested,

meanwhile it costs CN 1 million a day

So afterwords and moving forwards, the RCMP will still have to deal with the people of the village

Too soon to start a pool?

When will the Coq re-open?

My bet it it's maybe open for August Long weekend.  Winter snow is just about here to burry the Coq for a winter slumber, it's going to take most of the summer to repair it.

I would think it will be open in some limited temporary fashion in the next few months. Open and repaired are two different things.

going to be longer than you think....  what other bridges are f*cked as well.  Geotechnical Engineers are going to make a killing the next year or two.

The sheer volume of infrastructure destroyed is going to take a long time to even get a temp fix in place.

What a mess. Ya I wouldn't bet on it being open this winter. Too many bridges are destroyed.

For comparison, consider how long it took to build two relatively small bridges across Lynn Creek, and that was after months of site evaluation and design work.
