Thinking about buying a used Land Rover LR4, 2010 or 2011. Do any of you have one or know someone with one. Looking for some real world feedback. Thanks.
Land Rover LR4
I only know of one LandRover owner, and don't have much positive to report.
Fastest depreciation, very high maintenance costs, some of the lowest in class fuel efficiency.
But - they do look sweet.
If you're going to waste money on a Land Rover, at least do it right. A friend has one of these he imported from the UK and built into a battleship. It's sweet!
Look sweet they do.
A 2010 or 2011 is around $35000 loaded with 75-100,000 km, similar in price to a Tahoe or Sequoia of the same year/km.
Heard similar complaints from some and rave reviews from others.
I have had an older version for a few years, and as you said, I was one of those who had a love-hate relationship.
It was awesome to drive, a true adventure vehicle. With some serious drawbacks.
Even if your potential Defender has a different engine, electricity and tires, it still remains a car which body and technology was designed in the late 1940s.
You definitely need to regularly check the body and the underside(?)/frame to which the body has been screwed/rivetted onto.
Find out how the body is fixed to the wheels/frame and what kind of naterial has been used and you might see huge drawbacks, esp when you live in the PNW. Think lots of water and corrosion.
Then, safety is definitely not up to par. Depending on what you want to do with it, think long and hard.
It can pull a building, is awesome on forest roads and off road, but needs a lot of TLC.
And Land Rover stops making them, safety and general technology (think Big Jigsaw Puzzle) have become too much of an issue if the body has the impact resistance of a 1950s car.
Given today's traffic and how the other cars are currently beefed up and designed, the step by LR is understandable.
I know some guys who will sell theirs as soon as they have children, no joke.
If you have the cash….buy it, conserve it as good as possible - and your grandchildren might be rich.
Over here, the prices have sort of sky rocketed.

Tata is trying to remedy that.
The new Discovery Sport looks nice, and it has a nifty rear setup (back row on rails, third row available). Plus, it starts at 42K, which is 18K less than the outgoing LR4.

I think the key to owning one of those is to be prepared to spend money on it , even when you don't HAVE to . . . as in , be prepared to stay on top of the preventative maintenance .
I've got a buddy , sport fishing guide , who drove a range rover for a number of years . took the thing to all kinds of places other guides would/could not go . he did most of the work on it himself , including some major stuff . he was constantly on the 'net sourcing parts .
unless you are really really into owning that truck , I'd look at other options .
Get a benz G wagen. if youre gunna be sinking money into a black pit of depreciation at least get something cool
Ha Ha! Made you look.

I am sure the depreciation won't be as bad as of a LR4, too.
I like Range Rovers, would be sweet to have something like this for my off road and mtb adventures.
The only drawback to those is the price. Way too much. For that much money I can get a decent VW bus/camper van.
