Kite surfing / Windsurfing

I have windsurfed in the past at the beginner level and if i lived close to constant wind it would have kept my interest. Going to be living close to some steady wind and year round warm temps and need something to satisfy my adrenalin needs. Kite surfing looks fun.

Anybody done it? Which is better.

I've done both. They're not better. Just different.

I lived in Victoria and regularly went to the Gorge in Columbia River and the Oregon Coast and Baja to progress in windsurfing.

If I lived in vancouver (where it really isn't often very windy) I'd take up kiting. You can get going in lighter wind with a kite and the gear is much less complicated.

You're going to the Philippines? You'll have trade winds and much nicer conditions but I don't know how windy it is where you'll be. If you want to short-board windsurf you'll need winds of greater then 15 knots. Kites can get going in 10 knots or less. I never got into long board windsurfing (gear for that is pricy) but you can have a blast on that in 10 knot winds

They do alot of both up at squamish,I drove out to the river to watch one day when I was up there for work

It was calm enough in squamish to sit outside and have lunch but out at the mouth of the river it was fucking blowing and I noticed the port-o-can was staked out with concrete blocks so it didnt get blown over …something about the shape of the valley affecting the winds and it just honks

It averages from 10 to 15 knots In Cebu which is a central Philippines surrounded by many islands so no surf unless your facing open ocean.

Borocay is the windsurfing capital with fast flat tropical water.http://www.extremesportscafe.com/windsurfing_philippines.html

Aside from looking for hobbies I have been researching ideas for a fun business and throwing around a bunch of ideas, one thing there is no shortage of is dive tours. There is one bike tour operation on Cebu but no windsurfing that i know of.

One local told me of beach front properties for 1000 to the north. Problem with owning land and not occupying it is legal for others to take it over in your absence. Thats why foreigners who have vacation homes there always pay someone to stay when they leave.Which is still very cheap.

I only have to make 20 bucks a day to get by. :greedy:

Cataduanas island is some place I've wanted to go for surf since high school.

I'd say kite surf for the light days and learn to surf for the big days.

The new surf kites are actually really nice and probably better then the trainer. Easier to depower. Easier to control. Less tangling possibilities.

How does one get into such sports?

Granted I'm in landlocked Ab, there's always kiteboarding.
Do people offer lessons? Rentals?
Or is it just a huge up front investment and years of fun?
