Yeah if I could drive my service truck onto the sky train that would be the cats ass. Until then I am looking forward to that new port Mann bridge!
It's official ... we suck at traffic!
Oh I'm sorry I forgot you had millions to buy a house in vancouver let alone anywhere close to downtown? Yea fuck off.
Oh that's right our public transportation is reliable and efficient wtf was I thinking
Transit in Vancouver is pretty efficient (coming from someone who takes it all the time).
In the Suburbs though, not so much. We don't need another skytrain line, or an expansion of the skytrain imo. LTR is something that would be much more efficient to get going then a skytrain. Costs less to build, plus it would take a lot less time as well.
Yeah?
It's not just you in your f150 idling away in traffic spewing pollutants into the air.
it's everyone on the face of the planet. lets minimize what we can yeah?
Don't you own a vehicle and a motorcycle, and also drive to work?
OMG totally agree, that bridge (and highway expansion) is the stupidest thing ever. 100 years from now (or much sooner, when we run out of oil) our descendants are going to say "what the F** were they thinking!!".
that money should have gone into expanding and improving transit.
If the highway is widened for a dedicated bus lane, and the new bridge has a dedicated bus lane, then transit via buses will take much less time. That's a good thing.

People think it's their fundamental civil right to be able to commute from downtown to Langley every day. They kept doing it even when the cost of fuel went up, changing their gas bill from $150/mo to $450/mo. They insist we build things like the new Port Mann bridge rather than putting money into extending Skytrain everywhere. I just don't understand….
Problem is that a lot of businesses want to be in the downtown core. That means about, what, 200K workers downtown every day (I'm guessing). That's the suits and the support staff (construction, repair, janitorial, etc.). Where are these people supposed to live?

Beat up Tacoma's get great mileage, and definitely don't produce much for GHG.
Doesn't blasting through rock on the island for people to do things like build road and mini mansions also go against this attitude?

Blasting has been dead for over a year and if you wanna know what I do, I carpool to work in the guys shitty commuter car. It's not always convenient but I don't see why 2 people going to the same place at the same time that kinda sorta live on the way need to take their own cars.
its bollocks, especially with all the guys in pickup trucks I see every single day wasting fuel, polluting the air twice as much as necessary.
People are hung up on dreams of owning a bigger house for less, well commuting also has its costs. some you can easily see and are hard to ignore.. others like air pollution harder to see but real easy to ignore (for now) pretty hard to justify.
just thinking about how bad its gotten in the past 15 years.. and how much worse its gunna get in another 15 years?
Ha Ha! Made you look.

fair play, sir! I don't disagree, commuting is shit. I hope I never have a severe one.

agree - transit in vancouver is fantastic - the broadway corridor has buses coming every 5-7 minutes. in the 'burbs it's every 30, and on weekends every hour. that's silly.
i take the train, and have heard of people sleeping through their stop on the way home, ending up in mission and being completely stranded because there's no transit service to get back into town. granted it's their fault, but that is pretty unacceptable.
You don't like being in traffic, don't drive. Need to drive to work? Live near work. Can't afford to live near work? Find a job near where you live. Your job requires you to drive? Get another job. Shopping, activities, kids schools? Same deal.
Wow, sounds easy. Everyone just needs to go out and get the perfect job next to the perfect place to live.

If you are dumb enough to sleep through your stop, you are dumb enough to deserve to need to take a cab back to your stop. It's not exactly like it takes a different amount of time to get to your stop every day… just set an alarm. Or, shocker, stay awake!!!

If people could start moving from giant metal cars and trucks to small electric commuter vehicles the new Port Mann might not look that stupid. We need to have it all. Skytrain, light rail, cars, donkeys. After 100 years building up an infrastructure for cars it would be silly to abandon the idea for nothing but public transit.
My vision for the future is a city filled with automated Google taxis. You can skip owning a car and just hit a button on your smart phone and one pulls up to get you. This is no more far fetched than having 90% of the population ride the skytrain/bus.

That just won't work. I need to commute in my Lambo to show people that I'm better than they are.

On a positive note Calgary will be opening a huge expansion to it's c-train (think sky train that isn't in the sky) this fall. It'll give thousands (10s of thousands?) an easy excuse to leave their cars at home everyday.
Interesting how Vancouver has the worst congesttion yet polite drivers. While Toronto has less congestion then Vancouver but has serious anger management issues.
If you think Vancouver has polite drives they must be absolute assholes in T-town. Any time
I have to drive in Van, I find I'm a raving lunatic by the time I get out. I've had far
less issues in LA driving than Vancouver.
that's different. if those were the only vehicles on the road, it would be fine. it's the 1-person commuter vehicles that are causing the gridlock. there's got to be so much behind-the-scenes politics for that highway expansion, someone's getting a huge payoff. it makes no sense otherwise. get those commuters out of their cars, the powers that be should be working towards making commuting by transit make sense.
for realz, if i had to commute by vehicle i'd probably shoot myself.
Yep, real simple. Make public transit faster and more efficient than driving and people will
take it.

It was only after moving to Ontario and driving in Toronto when I realized how nice Vancouver drivers are.
Only bad thing about Van everytime I visit now is you all drive like your some 85 year old blind in one eye and can't see over the dash.
