But I wanted to poll the geniuses before I bite the bullet.
Is my microwave dead?
It's fine. It is just now a slightly-warmer-than-before machine.
Depending on what you use it for it's probably cheaper to just buy a new one than trying to get it fixed.

"You put your food in and it cooks it with "microwaves."
"Does it cook it well?"
"Not really...."
I don't really get how this is a staple in the kitchen in 2020.

With or without the power on, place your phone inside. Call it with another. If it picks up, probably best to get a new mic.

Some side research shows that he repair is likely 1/2-2/3 the price of a new one. Now the challenge is to find one that fits into my cabinet opening.
For a 17 y.o. microwave, the standards for screening out the radiation weren't as good as they are now, and there has likely been degradation of the screening since it was new. Just get a new one.
Fun fact: the viewing window of the microwave allows about 10% of the microwave radiation to pass through. Don't stare at your food while it cooks.
Fun fact 2: Microwaves use the same radio wavelength as your wifi's 2.4 GHz bandwidth. That's why your wifi slows down when the microwave is operating.

Had the one above the stove oven hood combo unit. It died, I just replaced it with a new hood minus the microwave. Have to say I really don't miss having one.

re FF#2 - So you're telling me if we removed microwave ovens, we'd have faster wifi?? Arent new n old portable house phones also on the 2.4ghz range? So does that sort of mean peak bandwidth usage around dinner time isnt from people being home and using the internet, its all the side appliances clogging that bandwidth when cooking at that time?
GF had one that was blowing the breaker when ever she openned the door so i gave her a spare i had sitting on a shelf, they are not really made to be serviceable if you take them apart there is a fuse in there that goes, they are fixable but mostly disposable its probably easier to just find a used one
Micro wave is good for lots of things in the kitchen mostly preppy/warming/thawing but not really cooking

I ordered a new one - picking it up tonight. After verifying all the measurements, I'm 99% sure I can re-use the trim kit.
