My friend tried one of those and the quality coming out of the stereo was kinda crappy, even the tape adaptor was better.
I think this is the one:

Never used the iRiver, however I own a first gen iPod (5gigs) and can assure you if you buy an iPod you will not regret it.

itunes became shitty when it actually has about 5proccess's runing around the 4-5k mark. Itunes/qthelper/ipoddecter/ipodhelp and one other service i cant remember. It takes ages to rip cd's and the transfer rate compared to using explorer is mince!

I like the ease of use of the iriver,

The ONLY downside i can see of the irviver is no docking station

Why hasn't anyone mentioned an alternative to both.

Read some reviews on the Rio Karma: it looks awesome. Also, the cowon iAudio M3 is nice.

If you own a mac, there is no debate. If you're on a PC, it's murkier. But the amount of good accessories for the ipod make a good case for its use for more than just music. You can use it as a startup disk, too, and also hook it up to any mac and transfer your desktop and OS over so that it's as if you're on your own mac.

Not to mention USB vs Firewire - that is a big speed difference.

Like before, get an iPod. Firewire runs at 400 Mbps and USB 2.0 runs at 480 Mbps. You may think the usb connection would be faster right, actually its generally slower. Firewire firmware and hardware are designed to be run at a maximum speed all the time no matter what is connected, hence thats while apple uses firewire for its accessories. USB was designed to well, umm, run, and thats about it. Yes it is possible to reach 480, but it may only happen once in your life. USB firmware and hardware is only told to transfer the files, a speed is not specified, so it will transfer the files at a speed which suites the computer or how it sees fit. So firewire will ultimitly go faster. If you want to hook up your Ipod to your car, there is the previous options listed, like iTrip. Or so decks have a mini jack in on the front, so just glup a 1/8" mini jack cord into your pod and the deck. Others will have the old RCA ports on the back, so again just run the cable through. You can get em at radioshack. As for the other functions, there are only slightly similar to a pda. My tungsten works much better than the ipod fuctions do. It can play mp3's, but i am limited to buying a 1 gig card, and well you said pda batteries actually last more than a couple of hours anyway?
