I don't see how having Telecom Execs, in highlevel positions at the CRTC, being able to 'regulate' the industry in the public's best interests.
Keep in mind that after their posting at the CRTC, which is usually sanctioned by their employer in the first place, some go back to their former positions, with almost all going back to the telecom industry that they started in.
Screw political influence from the industry minister, that right there is the perfect definition of Conflict of Interest.

I'll worry about this when and if I get affected by it. I download my fair share of movies and am always using my connection for something. I've never had a warning letter from Shaw. IIRC, this will impact only a small percentage of users.

While you may not be worried due to not receiving a warning so far you may want to reconsider.
I have definitely gone over a few times and have never been contacted. Also these high limits are not guaranteed. This is just the start of a new billing concept that could become more restrictive in the near future. It's probably got a lot to do with them wanting to curb torrent users who, like me, are over burdening their system. Still though at well over 100$ a month retail charges for TV and internet you would think that you are entitled to as much as you can use.

This actually happened to me earlier in the year. Had sent my phone away for a repair in the US and it was gone for over a month. SIM card was sitting on my desk that whole month. When I checked my data usage online it showed i had used a couple of hundred mb. Called Rogers and they promptly had it removed. I watch data usage pretty closely now.
Also speaking as someone who uses Netflix as one of their primary content providers, any data cap sucks. Really badly. Remember part of this is ISP's doing this now when the average consumer doesn't care that much, in preparation for the near future when almost all media content will be delivered via internet. Then they'll be raking it in, by offering ' special deals' on higher data caps.

I was just thinking of the "netflix" thing and how it might effect their "unlimited movie watching" for 8 dollars a month.
I just signed on with telus optik tv and Highspeed internet ( because i managed to get one HELL of a deal for the next 12 months and NO contract! I pay less than switch900 does for his internet alone.. and I get tv too 8) ) I dont even watch the tv bit, but I'm a gaming fiend, and I do a lot of youtube stuff ( mainly for guitar lessons) so I use quite a bit of bandwidth. but I still dont come close to my 100 GB cap. so I'm not too too worried about the cap thing.
In Quebec, my father is an internet hound, and there is no cap there but they are allowed to "throttle back" your speed if they consider you to be using too much bandwidth.
