It blows me away that the journalist is 74. Wow.
Ride, don't slide.
Thanks for sharing, definitely an interesting read.
What makes ISIS different from the Taliban and Al Qaeda is their "missionary statement", which is definitely scary and should be taken seriously by politicians and citizens alike.

the first? what about the VICE news docu?
Guy has massive balls for going over there voluntarily, knowing what they have done to other westerners.
If Obama or Putin gave the same flavour of tour would you be as willing to accept it at face value?

I still havent finished the article but it definitely crossed my mind that he was allowed to live and leave if he properly portrayed ISIS in the article in the way ISIS would approve. Afterall, what good would an article about a terrorist group be if it didnt instill fear while promoting recruitment.

So is it Fukishima, Ebola, or ISIS that's going to kill me? Or will an irradiated terrorist infect me with Ebola?
The best way to kill ISIS is to cut the US Defense budget in half.

I have to disagree. I do not think that this would work out at all. And no, I do not defend the inacceptable drone killings and other violations of human rights constantly done by the US government.
The goal of IS is not getting rid of the US presence, but a Mission that simply wants to return to an Islamic state - and this has nothing to do with the US Defense Budget.

may i clarify your statement mic ?
they don't just want an islamic state , they want THEIR interpretation of an islamic state , which appears to be a backwards , 12th century society where , for example , women get stoned to death .
if it weren't for the fact that they have stated the whole world should live this way , i'd say , hypothetically of course , give them some piece of the earth and let them practice what they preach . i wonder how many people would actually want to live there ?
10 days of being shown around by ISIS handlers is hardly a comprehensive and propaganda-free look. Its like spending 10 days in North Korea and proclaiming that you have had a full understanding of the nation/society. However, I don't think anybody, including NATO, doubts ISIS is a well-organized, formidable and highly-motivated organization. BTW, if they are the supermen as they would like everyone to believe, why haven't they defeated Bashir Assad's isolated (save for Putin), crippled and sanction-riddled regime? They are also well-funded by the Gulf Arab states (as are the Islamists in Libya).

There are thousands of westerners in ISIS … he was probably guided by German and/or German-speaking members.
Of course buddy was embedded with ISIS so we get a ISIS perspective, a western news source will get the same treatment when they are embedded with Coalition forces
what I see in journalism from the independant is a different non western perspective,
Some one like Robert Fisk or this guy I haven't heard of before will go in and find out what is really going on who are the players the power struggle the real story bad or good
western news is always the same thing … brown people bad/yeah coalition

Different from whose perspective? That of a 74-year old German dude?
