… but could use some help with the final decision… here are my 5 options.

Sony Bravia (32", 1080p)

Samsung 32" 1080p, seems a bit $$$$

Sony 32", 720p... attractive at the price

Sony Bravia, 40", 1080p, 60hz (prob my #1 ranked choice right now) edit: just worried about the 60hz, perhaps unnecessarily worried.

Samsung 40", 1080p, 60hz
(This one is 499 at Sears)

thoughts? am i totally techno-dumb?

cheers

Well - the Samsung 32" isn't on sale…so I'd skip that one.

Either of the 40 inch screens look good to me.

I have 21,474,850 rep points...

My blog - read it!

Double check if it's worth getting 1080p on the smaller sizes. I know I have heard that on 32" it's a waste, but I know nothing of new TVs. I still have some old curvy-screen Sanyo 27" or something.

Don't worry about not getting 120 hz, I can't stand it anyways.

Sony 32" 720P TV

I'm watching that one right now. It's good and while you can tell the difference with 1080 and 720 on a 32" TV if you stand in between both and compare from a foot away. If your going that size I'd save the money and maybe buy some speakers or something else with the 200$ you save.

I have the 46" of the Sony EX500, and one of my friends have a Samsung C610 of the same size.

The picture quality is far superior on the Sony after calibration on both. The Samsung is more vivid but looks fake. The Sony shows better contrast, and despite both being 120 Hz, the Sony appears to be just slightly less blurry at fast motion. Nevertheless, blurring is rarely noticeable on either machines for regular TV programmes. A quick Googling tells that the Sony screen is also made by Samsung, but is of better quality than the one put in the C610 (different contractor).

The Samsung does have a much better remote control. My main complaint with the Sony is that its remote control feels cheap and does not have back light like the Samsung. The Sony also takes longer to start up than the Samsung. There is no clock function for the Sony.

That said, since the C610 is the step-up model of C550 and C530, I suppose it is supposed to be better than those two. And it is still my opinion that the EX500 is better than the C610 overall.

From what I know, the EX400 is the same as the EX500, but without 120 Hz. I don't think 120 Hz adds significant benefit for viewing. Actually, I turn off the Motionflow when I link my computer to the TV and when gaming, and I haven't noticed anything distracting. But I almost never watch sports on TV.

One consideration. The 40 inch samsung only has 2 hdmi ports… Which is actually probably sufficient.

edit. and the 40 inch sony has 4.

I just bough the 32 inch samsung 1080ip today, the last one in the west van future store, $60 off being the demo.

The reason I went for this one becuase I wanted:

More than 3 HDMI inputs (3 at back and one on the side),
Game mode, which compensates for lag/ghosting when playing fast computer games such as FPS,
I like the styling,
Colours are vivid
Good contrast,
Half decent speakers,
A USB port to connect a ram stick or hard drive,
It will play native DivX, Xvid and mkv files off the usb (sony's do not do this), it also plays MP3; AC3; WMA; Real Audio; MPEG; AAC and opens jpegs
It also has an ethernet connection so you can access your home network drives and devices, such as NAS devices and play stored content.

If you are not worried about 1080ip and are ok with 720 (many people say that 1080ip is not worth the bother on a 32 incher, then you should check out this Samsung which has all the above features at 720p, but at $429:

What is your viewing distance, do you need 32 or 40, see here for some general guidance

Hope that helps and good luck. Whatever you do, they are all great TV's.

Please let me demonstrate the ride around; really it's no trouble.

32" is a waste of time. don't go smaller than 40" as you will always want more. my 50" plas isn't big enough anymore:(

Clunking is for retards.
