I Need a new Laptop

And I beseech the help of the NSMB NBR gurus.

I had an Asus EEE PC netbook, which worked great, but it finally died last week. I've been looking at Ultrabooks or 11-13" PC's from Dell, HP, Asus, Acer.

Any brands I should stay away from? Any insider tips? Any good deals?

I don't want to spend anything over $400, and I don't think that's unreasonable.

Also, I've only used Windows XP, and it seems like everything now is 8 (or 7). Am I going to hate it?

I saw this at Best Buy and it has piqued my interest: http://www.bestbuy.ca/en-CA/product/asus-asus-x-series-x202e-11-touchscreen-laptop-black-intel-pentium-987-500gb-hdd-4gb-ram-windows-8-x202e-bh91t-cb/10227480.aspx?path=4526722fa2bfce1a06bd84f0d4c198aden02[HTML_REMOVED]SearchPageIndex=1[HTML_REMOVED]ActiveTab=Tab_custReview

I almost forgot, you cannot get anything from NBR without giving a little something. So, here's a beautiful redhead:

What are you using the computer for? If its just basic things like emails and web surfing then why not look at tablets?

Personally, unless I am edited photos, I use my tablet for 99% of my computer usage.

Being an agoraphobic adrenaline junkie would be pretty convenient, because you could get your rush from just going to the store to get some milk instead of having to jump off a mountain or out of an airplane.

I have a tablet, which I use for a fair amount of my internetting, but for email, photo editing, storing [HTML_REMOVED] archiving, it's way easier to use a laptop.

If you are photo editing, 4 gigs of ram and Win8 will drive you nuts - the reviews on that one you linked had people saying it was too slow.

Win8 seems like it would be okay for a touchscreen/tablet. Otherwise, I don't like it much as it is messing with other drivers all the time. Win7 was awesome, and it is a lot like XP for usability

$400 isn't going to get you an Ultrabook, nor a decent sub 14" laptop.

For that price, I know of a pretty good 14" Asus U46E. iCore i5 2410, 8GB RAM, fast 750GB HD, HD graphics, USB 3.0, good battery life, and solid build.

For $400, ASUS is not a bad choice. I cannot recommend Acer or similar in that price range. Samsung may be OK. If you can go to $450 there are some notebooks with integrated AMD CPU+GPU which have decent gaming performance (relative to their cheap $450 price vs. $900 laptops).
