Dividends are also variable, so your best off to use the smallest divedend listed historical when figuring out if you will own enough for a DRIP before investing in an ETF.

As I understand, the contribution limit for TFSAs carry forward.

So if I never contributed since 2009, today I can contribute the full amount with being assigned a penalty:
2009 = $5000
2010 = $5000
2011 = $5000
2012 = $5000
2013 = $5500 (new contribution limit)
2014 = $5500
2015 = $5500
Total = $37500 allowable contribution today.

Am I right that I can put this amount in my TFSA today without penalties?

Check your arithmetic but your principle is correct.

It's $36500 maximum.

Just log into your CRA account and check your personal limits. That way you can't go wrong. Check out my more detailed post in this thread;

Tried this app. Didn't like it because it makes the same assumption that all financial advisors make. It assumes one's expenses rise to meet one's salary. There's no way to tweak it for someone who keeps expenses low and saves over 50% of income.

By buying Teslas???

I agree though - retirement wasn't permitted prior to 62 or something. Useless.

Only one …. no plural needed!

Buying the Tesla only pushed back retirement plan a year, and it provides a lot of enjoyment. I'm still on track for full FI in about 3 years.

Can someone please start a "How much do you know about financial dependence" thread… then I'll have somewhere to contribute.

Actually, we might need an entire subforum for that one…

It's called the gear forum.

Just kidding Ken. Buying a quiet E-car that you can't hear sneaking up in a rear view mirror is the epitome of FI.

His name is Paul Carter, and he was one of the first in Canada to pre-order the Model X.
