So, the Chinese snatched another one.

That's three of our pawns for their Queen.

There are times it is obvious the world has changed. Dallas 1963, the fall of the Berlin Wall, Brexit.

There are times when it is not immediately obvious. Archduke Franz Ferdindand’s driver taking a wrong turn in Sarajevo in June 1914.

It is the consequences that make us realize how important the initial moment was. One such moment was last week.

It was not the arrest, on a US request in Canada over alleged breaches of Iranian sanctions, of the Huawei chief financial officer Meng Wanzhou that was so significant. Nor her bail.

What changed the world was the admission by the US president that she was a hostage to fortune. Trump achieved something incredible, judicial equivalency with China.

The archduke’s car has just taken a wrong turn. We await the consequences.

Freedom of contract. We sell them guns that kill them; they sell us drugs that kill us.

I really don't think Trump's words outweigh the actual arrest or "changes the world".  At this point none of the other world leaders really takes anything he says seriously.  Plus this analogy sucks.  The wrong turn was the FIRST moment in time that altered history by setting WW1 into motion (although war was coming anyway), so the "wrong turn" is definitely the arrest because Trump's statement wouldn't exist without it.  4/10

Three? There are hundreds of Canadians in prison in China. Most are there for working illegally on tourist visas, some are there for more serious things like rape, fraud, dealing drugs and other things people normally go to jail for.

If you think our people don't go over there and fuck around too you're mistaken.

But there's a difference.  They don't make headlines on Counterpunch.

How many are or were arrested in retaliation for arresting a Chinese national?

Maybe we should throw her ass back in jail? I hope that many Canadians are taking notice of this. Maybe time to put all the immigration applications from China in the trash. Then their corrupt elite will take notice.

Yeah because that will totally help the thousands of other Canadians in China that haven't been arrested yet.

Ok good. Glad to know either the Canadian media just started reporting on Canadians being arrested in China or China just coincidentally started arresting Canadians after the Hauwei exec was arrested. Life's funny like that.

China has been arresting Canadians at a rate of about 3 a week for the last 10 years. Mostly drunk and disorderly tourists who think once they're in Asia they can behave however they want.

Our media just started reporting on it to draw attention away from the fact that we fucked up.

There are about 60 000 Canadians living in China at the moment.
