I thought my factory installed Windows One Care got me though the great NSMB virus of 2010.
I was wrong, just finished reformating my hard drive and lost everything since it was not backed up and i am a Safe Mode [HTML_REMOVED]newb
i have Avast now….any good?
Ok….hit it and run, i am out of here till i feel safe….
As I actually work for an computer security company, my opinion is by definition biased.
So here's the none-biased version;
There are a lot of free AV software programs out there. Pick one that works, and use it.
Microsoft has a free home-use one as well (security essentials) and is actually pretty good. Their catchrates are decent, and false positives are really low. There's other free ones (malware bytes, avast, avg), as well which are ok, there are useless ones, and there are fake AV programs that cost you money and do nothing.
The argument that AV is useless for new viruses because its all signature based is complete BS. Every AV company has been using at least some sort of behavioural analysis for the last 10 years to get around the volume and polymorphic sample problem (each binary/script being slightly different than the last). Everyone has been developping this tech as well, so that argument died in the 90's.
The myth that all a virus does is slow down your computer and you should learn to live with it because its just as slow by having AV is foolish.
Its not just "making it slow", its doing something.
Usually redirecting your browser to pull ads from other sources (they make money via ad affiliate schemes), duping you into paying for software you dont need (fakeAV, etc) or actually stealing your credit card info, banking access, facebook, gmail, twitter or any other login credentials, to then dupe your friends to click on their spam/links/malware links, etc.
Your friends will trust links you send them via facebook/email more than ones they see on a random website.. get it?
Other ones (zeus/zbot) sit on your system till you log into your banking site, and make transfers to other (offshore, usually russia/ukraine) accounts from within your session.
This shit is sophisticated as hell.
Put it this way, if you have anything of value ON your computer, or access anything valuable WITH your computer, its probably being targetted by someone.
I wont ramble on, but the problem has gotten to the point of a bad spy-novel.
To those of you that got hit with something, and saw your computer behaving wierdly, and weren't running some av at the time, scan your systems. There are loads of free scanners out there that will remove malware.
You probably have got something.
Either use malware bytes (malwarebytes.org)
or use our free emergency distribution (self-extracting command-line scanner):

Norman, check to see if the vbulletin board version doesnt have any known vulns.. really common way attack sites/db's to get your scripts in it.
PM me for more info.

oh yeah, that he is. Thanks Ashek! (if that's really you, and not some malicious bot)

Clearly a malicious bot, just look at the photo evidence.
Sophos is our enterprise wide AV app at work and our net admin is a critical bastard. So if he rolls it out, I'm happy to give my thumbs up to the product.
But I still use Kaspersky @ home cause it's just easier - and it comes with 3 licenses so I can put it onto two lappys and a desktop.
Kn.
