Don't know if this is the case for the whole lower mainland, but it would appear that all restaurants downtown are charging an 18% gratuity regardless of party size. Just say no to double tipping.

Yes, many countries don't have the concept of tipping, after all the waiter is just doing his/her job. It's common practice here, so… auto gratuity for the duration of Olympics doesn't seem so bad.

Forcing a tip is one thing, but 18%? For me, you get 15% for good service, less if you suck. For 18% all my servers better have great tits.

Yup, we got hit with it at the Swiss House(Bridges)… luckily I noticed it at the last moment, group of 4. Had to ask for my money back as I had tipped on top of the added tip. grrrrrrrrrr

we have that too. if something gets f'ed and you arent happy the auto grat is taken off.

I am sure that if you tell them, they will adjust the bill, since it is meant primarily for foreigners.

And yeah 18% is a fucking rip-off, I am cheap, I give 10% for normal service and 15% if it was absolutely superb. Well, unless the total bill amt is small, then that changes.

Tips are not a right but something that needs to be earned. My friends and I go with the tip meter - you start out with 15% and must maintain decent service or it will drop. Bad service + bad food = no tip.

my experience with servers (except in high end restaurants) in Whistler is that it's about the worst service I've ever experienced. They should be paying me 18% to endure it.

Got the same thing at Provence Marinaside in False Creek this morning. The waitress pointed it out when she brought the bill. The food/service was good so no complaints really. Still, I kind of resent having a tip predetermined and forced upon me. If everything sucked and one wanted to subtract the 18%, I doubt they could do much about it.
