Guns

I took the morning to put together a friend's Remington 742 that was brought to me in pieces and with a broken disconnector on the trigger group. That disconnector is a discontinued part, but I tracked one down from Western Gun Parts in Edmonton as well as new sear and hammer springs.

These guns were made to be carried into the bushes and this one had certainly had a hard life - it was scratched to hell, missing bluing on the crown, the bolt handle, the bottom of the action, and various scratches all over the barrel. Even though my friend said he cleaned the barrel, I soaked it overnight with Wipeout and the first few patches were pure blue - signs of copper fouling.

So, I scrubbed out the barrel, replaced the disconnector, disassembled it so I could get the gas tube out to clean (it was completely caked with built up powder as well as the handgaurd being caked in residue), and reblued the action, the crown, the magazine, the bolt handle, the handgaurd's sling stud, and various scratches on the barrel. It was a decent little project that went really smooth.

Pictures aren't the best, but I was in a hurry to get my boys to soccer on time.

it's like having a no peeing section in a swimming pool, firearm regulations don't work unless everyone is playing by the same rules.

anyway - wrong thread for this tungsten.

Careful - you may get PTSD:

Bang bang!

Seriously though:

Go and buy a .22 - cheap, fun, easy. Just go enjoy shooting - it's a safe sport; don't be put off by assholes - they're everywhere. Not just shooting sports. Oh - invest in some GOOD ear muffs/ear defenders. Not just the cheapest ones you can find.

Suggest checking out PCDHFC range if you're in the Lower Mainland - nice range - out to 200m - Range Officers are really on point and very safety conscious. Which is just what I want out of an RO.

Gun culture 2.0 is still in its infancy in Canada, but driving the culture in the US - more women, more urban, less white, less hunting.

Did you do your RPAL at the same time as your PAL?

no RPAL.  my main interest is not the norm. i travel more and more to remote places in BC. if i ever hit and seriously injured an animal on the road, i would want to put it down. beyond that i may want to hunt someday but i'll have to shoot a lot and become proficient and accurate before i point a gun at anything alive.

You're right - that is pretty much the weirdest reason i have heard for getting your PAL! There's something in it for everyone. Pretty sure there are regulations about doing that (aren't there regulations about everything hey?) as you're discharging a firearm on the road, and also not necessarily shooting something that is in season - or that you have a tag for. I'm sure you've looked into that though.

haven't really, but i know there all kinds of rules about these things. my friends hit a moose once and said how traumatic it was watching it suffer for hours. someone finally came along with a gun and put it down without qualms.

Check with Silvercore, they do back country training for bear defence and such. As far as euthanizing a injured animal on the side of the road. Not sure on that one, I would dig deep . In this situation you are now discharging a firearm on a road. Locally here in the area you can shoot in the bush. One needs to be 400m from the road. This is where grey areas fall into play. And I have never dealt with a CO( Conservation Officer). But from what my uncle and his buddies state they have their own mindset and laws.

Where does one acquire guns and ammunition with high stopping power without having a PAL?

Asking for a friend 🙄
