I need to get a new graphics card that is comparable to:
128 MB Nvidia GeForce 6600 GT or 128 MB ATI X1600

I don't want to spend tons of money on it, since it's to play a video game I got for free, so I'm looking at craigslist or ebay, but have absolutely no idea where to start looking. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I should get, or at least can fill me in on what info I need to know before I buy something.

Thanks!

That's like saying "I need to buy a new car that's better than a Model T". Nothing like those cards has been on the market for a few years. What Infamous said, but make sure the video card expansion slot on your machine is compatible. Those cards recommended are PCI-express.

If your machine is older, make sure your power supply can take the load.

craigslist is an excellent place to look for those cards. Maybe even the flea market. The 128 mb of Ram is the critical component - more ram will be better - every other running, older computer out there will likely have this capability or more.

edit.

I just did a craigslist search for video card - price max of $40 - tons of cards for $25 - you just need to establish what type of slot your machine has free.

So I just checked, and I have a pci express slot. So all I need is to find a card that has a number than 6600 and has more ram than 128mb?

6600 GT is at the bottom of this graph:
http://www.tomshardware.com/charts/gaming-graphics-charts-2008-q3/3DMark06-v1.1.0-3DMark-Score,794.html

with a score of about 1500.

You can get 5 times the that speed, plus a lot of additional features (support for later version of DirectX, etc.) for $40.

Anyone know what the fastest passively cooled video card available is? I've got a GT240 silent, and I'd like to get something faster if it's not much of an expense.

Why are you running a silent card?

You could do something like this.

That card is probably slower than what I have now, which was the fastest silent card when I bought it. Something 50% to 100% faster would be great.

I dislike noisy computers, so I have a silent video card and very quiet CPU/PS/case fans as well as SSDs. :)
