A couple of months ago I got a GoPro Hero2 as a gift. Over the long weekend we went on a road trip so I shot some video with it.

Now I need a new laptop and video editing software to do something with the raw footage.

What are people using as their video editing laptop?

Video editing software?

Thanks for any help. I can pay in rep.

The best software I found was CyberLink PowerDirector. Reasonably cheap (around $49 on sale when I bought it) and consistently wins best-in-group compared to the other, usually more expensive, offerings out there.

It's worthwhile spending money of video software, the free stuff just doesn't cut it for ease of use and output options IMO

Decent suite of tools for all you'll want to do. Not the best, but easy to use, good bang for buck.

Adobe premier pro - needs a 64bit system but very easy to use, imports go pro natively and has export settings for vimeo and youtube

What about hardware? How much CPU horsepower do I need? Anything else I should be looking for on a new laptop?

You can use anything. The older and slower it is, the longer it will take to render your edits.

If you plan on doing long edits, prepare to wait regardless of your hardware.

Get an SSD drive. Two if you can fit them in there.

My kid got one for his birthday.

We use

MacBook Pro 13-inch: 2.4 GHz, 2.4GHz dual-core Intel Core i5, 4GB 1333MHz, 500GB SATA 5400-rpm with built-in SD card reader and iMovie. Seems to work fine.

Processing 1080p hi-res requires decent RAM and processing power.

I can edit the movie to my satisfaction using windows moviemaker. Sure you can't do some of the fancier editing but I don't have that much time on my hand.

My laptop (cheap $500 HP laptop about 1.5yrs old) on the other hand is pretty slow in editing/processing the movie and can be frustrating at times.
