Protecting people from themselves is both a bigger issue, and a more slippery issue than anything else in this thread. If you're looking for another example of addiction that isn't sex or exercise, how about overeating? The media is quick to talk about the 'obesity epidemic' and try to find help for these poor people, but will demonize a pothead. The argument could be made that neither is more chemically addictive than the other; they're both just mental. Why paint the same issue with two different brushes?

Personally I'm of the mind that there should be help available should these people need it, but 'protecting people from themselves' is generally too dangerous a road to start walking down.

yes it is a slippery issue, but it is also clearly connected to the addiction problem and the illegal drug issue in this city. you're also right that it is a mental issue. i knew people that could use coke recreationally and never got themselves into trouble, while others would let it take over their live's. how do you protect the vulnerable yet at the same time allow others certain personal freedoms?

the whole thing is no doubt a rat's nest of complicated issues that are all tied together. unfortunately in vancouver a lot of issues have come together to create the situation we're in.
