back in the day there was a gas station between L.A. and Vegas  (maybe Barstow) where you could pin enough money to the wall behind the cashier to fill yer tank to get you home,  so when you get to Vegas fill yer tank, pay yer hotel bill and start playing

But if you don't gamble you realize just how fucked up the place is, machines haphazardly setup everywhere, corridors that just end, it took me 3 days to find the coffee bar in the lobby

All I can think of is ...

A guy at IBM told me about the money on the wall thing, he was a 280lb 6'5" black guy wearing a nice suit doing of all things collections, he said he was that big at age 16 making huge coin sharking pool and on weekends they would head up to Vegas,  which begs the question what happened ... buddy got drafted

Well, he asked if any of us like to gamble, not what we thought of his life choices, but I digress.

I didn't see anybody chastising him for his life choices tho. Now I digest.

"I can think of a lot more fun things to go out and do with my wife than sit in front of a slot machine wasting money for hours on end."

"Sound like its more about the gambling than spending time doing something fun with your significant other."

"for some people gambling is right up there with alcoholism, 1 drink a day won't kill you but can you control it?"

If he was going for a drink to a local watering hole a couple times a month and asking our thoughts would the following comments seem reasonable?

"I can think of a lot more fun things to go out and do with my wife than sit at a bar wasting money for hours on end."

"Sound like its more about the drinking than spending time doing something fun with your significant other."

"for some people drinking is right up there with drug addiction, 1 bump a day won't kill you but can you control it?"

Maybe it is just me, but IMO, NBR could lighten up a bit.

If he didnt want opinions, he probably shouldnt have asked for them?  Next time ill just say 'no' , which will make for some really riveting forum discussion.

As to your point of comparing gambling to going for a drink at a bar?  In my opinion it would be the same answer.  I wouldn't get any enjoyment from sitting at a bar (alone or with my wife) drinking either.  Once again......each to their own.

Opinions are welcome of course, and in mine, you not only said you don't like gambling and therefore don't do it as JBV did, but you also called him out saying it sounds like he just wants to gamble and not have fun with his wife, which isn't really in the spirit of "to each his own"... again, in my opinion.

Jeez it's not like it's the only thing we do together. We spend maybe 4 -5 hours a month at the casino tops.

And for the record I asked who around here gambled, not who doesn't.

Sure it's 4-5 hours a month now, but in a year when you have lost your wife to a rich man during a poker game in Vegas, you can't say NBR didn't warn you!

Ok, back on topic... I don't gamble at the casinos or at all really - maybe the odd lotto ticket at most. I think playing cards with your buds for some low level stakes can be fun, but I don't really see that as gambling as the point is more about the game and hanging out vs trying to win.

Quoted for when you're living in a van down by the river.

I've always wanted to live in a van down by the river. Unfortunately this whole marriage thing makes it impractical.

See I like the sound of that but my friends all know my tells, I suck at hiding my feelings so I always lose.

then make the bets/limits low so nobody loses their shirt. do something like $20 gets you a certain number of chips and all that money goes into one pot. at the end of the night it's winner take all. at best you win say $100 and at worst you lose $20, but a night of sitting around a table arguing over worthless topics is priceless.
