We don't know what our limits are, so to start something with the idea of being limited actually ends up limiting us.

that's $20 more than I paid for my 42" LG - though mine has 3 HDMI ports and I use them all (I have no receiver).

That particular one is only 720P which might start to make a difference in a TV of that size. That being said the 1080p version is there in the sidebar at $649 down from $899.

Isn't the conventional wisdom that it becomes noticeable when it is larger than 40"? I think I would go for the 1080p.

Very dependent on viewing distance. New PCs are available with 4k res (3840x2160). If you are using a 20" monitor and sitting the typical 2-3 ft from your monitor, it makes a difference.

That assumes you've got 1080p content to watch, which is still pretty limited. AFAIK, nothing is broadcast in 1080p, only 720p or 1080i. Shaw and Telus have some video on demand content in 1080p, as does iTunes. Other than that I think it's just Blu-ray and the home videos you shoot with your own camera.

All things being equal, I'd buy a 1080p TV, but for something like a bedroom TV that doesn't get a lot of use, I'd go with any decent 720p that's on sale.

720p at 50 inches is going to look like crap. If you buy 1080p you can hook it up to a computer and use it as a huge freakin' monitor.

If you mean sitting 50 inches from the TV then possibly, if you mean on a 50 inch TV then no.

Try using a 50" LCD at 1280x720 with a laptop hooked up to it, vs the same size 50" screen with the same laptop but at native resolution of 1920x1080… The difference is clear.

Did you even look at the graph? It's not just made up shit, it's derived from real information about the perceptive ability of the human eye and brain.

1080 is still 1080, whether it's i or p. So if you've got 1080 lines on the source, it is best reproduced with a display that has 1080 native lines.

Handy little chart. It pretty much confirms what I was told about the 40" screen though because I doubt many people would have a 40" screen closer than 7 or 8 feet.
