seems the radiation levels are now the highest they've been since the meltdown. apparently it's going to take about 40yrs to clean the mess up.

The extraordinary radiation readings highlight the scale of the task confronting thousands of workers, as pressure builds on Tepco to begin decommissioning the plant â a process that is expected to take about four decades.
The recent reading, described by some experts as âunimaginableâ, is far higher than the previous record of 73 sieverts an hour in that part of the reactor.
A single dose of one sievert is enough to cause radiation sickness and nausea; 5 sieverts would kill half those exposed to it within a month, and a single dose of 10 sieverts would prove fatal within weeks."
We don't know what our limits are, so to start something with the idea of being limited actually ends up limiting us.

Well just because Fukushima has been a disaster you can't use that as an example of why nuclear energy is a poor choice. Simply put it was a poor design in a bad place. It's like saying gas powered generators are bad because one killed your family when you let it run all night inside the house during a power outage.

after doing some further reading it seems that the guardian piece i linked to is a bit alarmist and misleading in the message it's conveying. the message that should be stated is that tepco has been able to measure radiation in parts of the reactor they couldn't previously access and while these measurements are higher than any others they've made yet they are not unexpected. in fact data has shown that radiation measurements are dropping near daiichi.
